Gladiolus ordinary, aka Skater (lat. Gadiolus communis) Is a perennial herbaceous tuberous plant belonging to the Iris family (Iridaceae). Translated from Latin "gladiolus" - "sword" or "sword", which fully corresponds to the appearance of the plant. Gladiolus ordinary is absolutely not picky and grows in many countries of Europe, Asia, the Mediterranean, but its homeland is Africa (areas of tropical and subtropical climates).
Historical facts
According to legend, gladioli were named after two friends of gladiators whom bloodthirsty Roman soldiers put to fight against each other. The friends did not fight with each other and, in protest, stuck their swords into the ground. The legend ends sadly, friends were shot with bows for disobedience, but as soon as their hearts stopped beating, the swords stuck in the ground gave root and bloomed, turning into beautiful flowers.
Characteristics of culture
Gladiolus ordinary is represented by a herb with a straight long stem 0.5 - 1.5 meters in height.
Two rows of long, thin leaves are arranged alternately. The width of the dark green xiphoid foliage is about 2.5 centimeters. The length of the sheet can reach from 15 to 80 centimeters. The base of the foliage fits snugly around the stem, which gives it greater strength. One peduncle can have from 10 to 20 inflorescences.
The flowers of the common gladiolus are funnel-shaped, with corrugated edges of the petals, and consist of six lobes, three stamens and one three-headed pistil. Inflorescences are painted in a red, purple or purple shade with white stripes in the middle. Bulbs of gladiolus ordinary ovoid flattened, up to 8 centimeters in diameter. The color of tubers can be very diverse: orange, dark brown, burgundy (depending on the variety).
Planting and leaving
Gladiolus vulgaris is a very popular plant all over the world; they love to grow it in greenhouses and in their summer cottages. With the right approach, it can be grown at home. These flowers are very fond of light and sun, so when choosing a place for planting gladioli, pay special attention to its illumination. It is best that the ridge is located from east to west. Any cultivated soil is perfect for planting bulbs, but if there is a lot of clay in the ground, then it is imperative to dilute it with sand and dry it.
It is necessary to change the landing site every year. Flowers will hurt if you plant them in the same place twice. It is best to plant the plant next year in "clean" soil, in which flower crops similar in root system and diseases, such as asters, daffodils, phlox, have never grown. From predecessors in the soil, a fungus may remain, which will destroy the bulbs.
If the spring was warm, and the sun actively warmed the soil, then planting begins in May. The minimum soil temperature should be 10 degrees, if the soil has not warmed up, the planting time needs to be slightly shifted. Before planting the bulbs in the soil, they need to be well peeled off, unhealthy and damaged areas should be cut out, and the cuts should be treated with charcoal.
The peeled tubers must be soaked in a solution of foundation for several hours for disinfection. As soon as all the necessary manipulations are completed, we proceed to planting. The distance between the tubers should be at least 10 cm. Bulbs of different sizes are planted at different depths. If the tuber is about 2-3 cm in diameter, then a hole is dug under it 5-10 cm. For small bulbs 1-1, 5 cm - a hole of 3-5 cm is quite enough.
As soon as the sprouts sprout, the bulbs must be abundantly fed. For this, humus is suitable, in addition to feeding, it will protect the bulbs from external factors and retain moisture. Gladioli are very moisture-loving, watering them is enough once a week, but at 10-12 liters per square meter, since the roots of flowers go into the soil up to 40 cm. As soon as the first inflorescences appear, ordinary gladiolus can be cut into bouquets. If you periodically change the water in the vase, then the plant will stand for a long time and all the unopened inflorescences will delight you with lush flowering.

To Prevent The Gladiolus From Curving
From the second half of summer to September, flower beds are decorated with luxurious gladioli. The name of the flower has ancient roots, and translated from Latin means sword or sword. It is not hard to guess why the plant is also called a skewer. However, when a peduncle of a perennial bent, it no longer looks so much like a noble blade. And bouquets of such plants look unattractive. What is the reason for this lack? And what kind of care do flowers require to avoid it?
