Hemantus amaryllis (lat. Haemanthus amarylloides) - a kind of bulbous plants of the genus Gemantus (lat. Haemanthus) from the Amaryllis family (lat. Amaryllidaceae). Umbellate cone-shaped inflorescences are formed by pink flowers, from which yellow specks of stamens stick out. The inflorescence is protected from environmental influences by thick plates of pink sepals. The general appearance of Gemantus amaryllis resembles a related plant with the name "Amaryllis".
What's in your name
The first word in the name of the plant speaks of its belonging to the genus Gemantus (lat. Haemanthus), the name of which, in turn, is based on two Greek words that mean "blood" and "flower" in translation.
This name was given to the genus by Karl Linnaeus, during whose time in Europe only two species of such plants were known, possessing inflorescences from the smallest flowers on Earth, having a bright red color. The same color was in the protective bracts, which surrounded the delicate and fragile flowers and seemed to be one with them. Such a bright commonwealth gave rise to the name. True, later plants were found that were morphologically equivalent to these two species, the bracts and inflorescences of which were white, pink (as in the described form), orange …
The specific name, expressed by the adjective "amarylloides" ("amaryllis-like"), is understandable without any reference. It was awarded to Gemantus for its resemblance to the Amaryllis plant, which gave its name to the friendly and beautifully flowering Amaryllidaceae family (lat. Amaryllidaceae).
The first botanist to describe Haemanthus amarylloides in 1804 was the Austrian botanist (originally from the Netherlands), Nikolaus Jacquin. In addition to his studies in botany, he was engaged in chemistry and metallurgy. His name has forever remained in the memory of people who love and study the flora of our blue "ball", thanks to Karl Linnaeus, who gave the name to one genus of plants from the Theophrastov family - "Jacquinia", and one genus of plants from the Orchid family - "Jacquiniella".
Description
Gemantus amaryllis has at least two or three subspecies. Depending on the habitat, they have some minor differences. And they can live in the most unfavorable places for ordinary plants, for example, in shallow sands lying over granite layers of rock; in loamy granite soils, where they form remarkably dense clumps, as the photo below shows:
Or stick to the rocky slope with single numerous peduncles, as in the following photo:
Annually, from the bulb to the surface of the earth, there are two erect bare leaves, the width of which varies from 25 to 65 mm, and the length - from 140 to 340 mm. Leaves may not be vertical, but lying on the surface of the earth.
Pink rigid sepals surround delicate miniature flowers of a lighter pink color, collected in a cone-shaped inflorescence-brush. They can exist simultaneously with the leaves, or proudly rise on peduncles above the surface of the earth, all alone. The inflorescences are shaped like old-fashioned shaving brushes. They appear in the world for a rather long period, starting in May and ending in November.
Subspecies
* Amarylloides - differs in hard sepal leaves, of which there are from 4 to 6 pieces. The flowers are pink.
* Polyanthus - has from 5 to 9 drooping sepals.
* Toximontanus - this species is at the stage of extinction. Its oblong-lanceolate leaves are pressed to the surface of the earth. The inflorescence is protected by 4 to 6 sepals.
