Alpine carnation Is a flowering ornamental perennial plant, in Latin its name will sound like this: Dianthus alpinus. It belongs to the genus Carnation of the Carnation family. In the wild, the presented plant species grows in the elevated territories of the Alps and in the North-East of Italy. This flower culture is actively used in garden and landscape design, to decorate paths, flower beds, as well as in landscaping rocky gardens.
Characteristics of culture
Alpine carnation is a perennial herb, the height of which does not exceed 25 centimeters. On the knotty peduncle, narrow, straight, dark green leaves are alternately located, gathering at the base of the stem into a rosette. At the top of the peduncle is a panicle-shaped inflorescence, consisting of miniature snow-white flowers. One flower has five identical petals with serrated edges, in the center of which a bunch of stamens protrude. The fruit is a small box that opens from the top with cloves.
Location and soil
Alpine carnation is quite sun-loving, in nature it grows in the mountains at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level, from which we can conclude that this plant feels most comfortable on elevated plots of land. When choosing a place for planting, you need to pay attention to the swampy soil so that water does not drain there after rains or melting snow, since this flower culture does not tolerate high humidity. For planting plants, it is necessary to prepare the soil in advance, it must be fertile, well-drained, loamy with a neutral acidity index.
Reproduction
Alpine carnation can be propagated in any convenient way: cuttings, layering, seeds and dividing the bush. When propagating this flower culture by seeds, you can lose the purity of the variety and its uniqueness, therefore, for the propagation of valuable varieties, it is best to turn to the vegetative method. To preserve the important decorative qualities of rare varieties, it is advisable to choose a method called grafting. To do this, in an adult bush, you need to cut off the lateral shoots, the length of which should be at least 10 centimeters. When choosing cuttings, you need to pay attention to the number of leaves, there should be at least 8 pieces. After cutting, the shoots are planted in open ground with pre-prepared soil, closer to autumn they can be transplanted to a permanent place of growth.
Care
Carnation of alpine carnation consists in daily moderate watering, loosening, weeding, timely removal of faded inflorescences and feeding. Alpine carnation is a drought-resistant crop and does not like high humidity, therefore it is advisable to water it early in the morning so that the necessary moisture has time to saturate the soil, and the excess evaporates during the day. Despite the finicky attitude of this flower crop in relation to watering, it should be regular and, if possible, daily, since with a lack of moisture, the plant blooms weakly and for a short time.
When weeds appear, they must be removed immediately, since they suck out nutrients from both the soil and noble plants.
Withered inflorescences must be removed in a timely manner in order to stimulate the emergence of young shoots and promote the development of the plant and its abundant flowering. If the soil is prepared and saturated with useful substances, then additional fertilization is not necessary for the cloves; it is necessary to feed it in the absence of flowering or after an illness. Humus or various mineral fertilizers are best suited for fertilizing a plant; it is advisable to refrain from using manure, since it attracts a large number of dangerous insects. This flower culture is fed during the dormant period, that is, before or after flowering.
