Gaillardia spinous (lat. Gaillardia aristata) - one of the brightest representatives of the Gaillardia genus of the Astrovye family, or Compositae. In nature, it is found in North America, to be more precise, in the western regions. The same places are the birthplace of the species in question. This representative is actively used by gardeners and flower growers in Russia and Europe. It is also used by breeders to obtain new hybrids and varieties belonging to the large Gaillardia hybrid group.

Characteristics of culture

Gaylardia spinous is represented by perennial herbaceous plants up to 80 cm high with straight, slightly curving, pubescent stems with short hairs that bear two types of foliage. Stem foliage - sessile, oval, oblong; basal - petiolate, whole-edged (less often toothed, which depends on the variety, of which there are a great many), densely pubescent over the entire surface.

Inflorescences, like all representatives of the Asteraceae family, are presented in the form of baskets. In spinous Gaillardia, they are pubescent, reach 10-12 cm in diameter, consist of two types of flowers - tubular yellow-purple in color and ligulate orange, rich yellow and red with a copper admixture. The flowering of the species in question is observed in summer, usually from June to late autumn. The species is relatively winter-hardy, but in severe and snowless winters it needs good shelter.

It is impossible not to note the drought-resistant properties of the culture, for a short time it can withstand the heat without watering, but it is important to remember that the activity of development and growth depends on this procedure, and, of course, the abundance and brightness of flowering. Like other Gaillardia, the species in question is resistant to pests and diseases, if you give the plants proper care and fulfill all its requirements, and there are not so many of them, by the way, then the defeat will not occur. Also, this factor depends on climatic conditions, and here a person is absolutely powerless, the only thing that can be done is to take preventive actions in a timely manner.

Popular varieties

Of the varieties of spinous Gaillardia, which can be found in the garden market, a variety called Mandarin is especially popular. It is characterized by medium-sized plants with red-yellow marginal flowers above the greenery. The variety belongs to abundant flowering, therefore it is loved by many gardeners and flower growers. It is impossible not to mention the variety Desir. It boasts of medium height and dark red ligulate flowers with yellow edges. A very interesting solution for any garden.

Another variety that has won recognition is the Goblin. It shares some similarities with Desir. Its ligulate flowers are red, turning sharply to the tips to a rich yellow hue, but the disc flowers are yellow-purple in color. In general, the baskets look very attractive, especially due to their size. The Arizona Sun variety is in no way inferior to him. This is a low-growing variety that forms compact bushes that bloom earlier than others. It is suitable for cutting, shaping mixborders and ridges.

Close to it is the Arizona Epricot variety. It is a relatively new variety, not exceeding 30 cm in height. Its ligulate flowers are apricot in color with bright yellow tips. Of the varieties represented by monophonic baskets, the Croftway Yellow variety can be noted. Its ligulate flowers are purely yellow in color, but this does not affect the decorativeness of the plants in the least.

Growing features

In general, the cultivation of spinous Gaillardia is no different from the agricultural technology of other species. It is also light-requiring, and needs sunny, sheltered from cold winds. Soil conditions are also important for her. The plant thrives best on light, moderately moist, drained and nutrient-rich soils. The culture in question does not accept the commonwealth with waterlogged, heavy and saline soils, just like lowlands with stagnation of cold air and melt water. Gaylardia spinous caring is also simple. She needs moderate watering, top dressing (three times per season), weeding, loosening and garter (we are talking about tall varieties).
