Gardenia jasmine belongs to the genus Gardenia and belongs to the family called Madder (Rubiaceae). The plant is characterized by an amazing scent of jasmine, and its white gardenia flowers invariably attract admiring glances. Gardenia can bloom even for several months, and the whole year the plant has incredibly beautiful glossy leaves painted in dark green tones.
Since ancient times, jasmine gardenia has been cultivated in China, there is information that this plant was known during the reign of the Song dynasty.
This species was described in the eighteenth century, after the plant was brought to England. In natural conditions, jasmine gardenia grows in Vietnam, Taiwan, Japan, India and southern China. This plant needs warmth, intense sunlight and light partial shade. Gardenia loves drained soils that are rich in organic elements.
In warm climates, jasmine gardenia is grown directly in gardens, while in other natural conditions it can be found in houses and greenhouses.
Growing and caring for jasmine gardenia
Gardenia jasmine is a rather difficult crop to care for, so certain conditions will need to be met for growing and caring for this plant.
As for the illumination, a bright light is needed, however, direct rays of a bright sun are unacceptable. Otherwise, burns may appear on the leaves. Southwest windows will be the best choice for this plant. During the winter period, a very bright light will be required for the plant.
During the daytime in summer, the temperature should be maintained at a little over twenty degrees, and at night the temperature should not be less than fifteen degrees. In winter, gardenia can experience a drop in temperatures even up to ten degrees. However, cool temperatures can adversely affect the plant.
Gardenias need high humidity, which must be uniform. The pot should be placed in a pallet that will contain wet expanded clay. On particularly hot days, the plant should be sprayed, but the water should not come into contact with the flowers. For watering, the water must be very warm and soft.
Jasmine gardenia needs moist soil, but it should not be soggy. Watering should be done regularly after the topsoil is dry. The plant should be watered from above, so the soil will be moistened evenly. In winter, watering should be reduced. For irrigation, you should use rain or melt water, and boiled water is also suitable. The water should not only be boiled, but then the water should definitely cool down. It will also be important to acidify the soil with lemon juice, for which you need to add a few drops per liter of water. This will help better assimilation of nutrients that are in the soil. Do not allow excessive watering or drying out of the soil, otherwise the root system of the plant can be very seriously damaged.
As for the soil, it is necessary to take mixtures for acid-loving plants, this includes not only gardenias, but also azaleas. Soils should not only absorb water quite quickly, but also have the ability to retain it. You will need to add a small amount of sand, sphagnum and perlite to the ready-made mixtures.
Young plants need an annual transplant in the spring. However, this is done only when the gardenia root system has grown abundantly. It should be transplanted into a larger pot, in which there will already be a special soil. Adult plants no longer need such frequent transplants.
If you follow all these measures, you will get an incredibly beautiful plant that will regularly attract admiring glances and delight you with its attractive appearance.
