Gaillardia hybrid (Latin Gaillardia x hybrida) - an extensive group of garden hybrids of artificial origin, obtained by crossing beautiful Gaillardia (Latin Gaillardia pulchella) and spinous Gaillardia (Latin Gaillardia aristata). The name of the culture may sound differently: Gaillardia, Gaillardia, Gaillardia. The group in question does not occur in nature. It is actively used by gardeners and flower growers all over the world, since it is distinguished by rich colors, extraordinary beauty and the ability to modify the garden beyond recognition.

Characteristics of culture

Naturally, all hybrids and varieties included in the hybrid Gaillardia group have their own distinctive features, and they are all good in their own way. However, they still have some similarities. For example, the height, it varies from 40 to 80 cm. The foliage of the majority is oval, pubescent. The inflorescences are complex, consist of two types of flowers - tubular and ligulate. Flowering of many varieties and hybrids is observed throughout the summer, and, as a rule, begins in the third decade of June - the first decade of July.

Flowering lasts about 2-2.5 months, after which the plant loses its decorative effect. By the way, inflorescences can be either simple or terry. Also on sale there are semi-double copies. The latter, in turn, are the most popular. All varieties and hybrids are suitable for decorating ridges, mixborders and flower beds, they are also used for making bouquets, which can boast a special "vitality", they stand in water for a very long time.

Of the varieties presented on the garden market, Golden Gobin can be noted. It is represented by low-growing plants that form compact bushes during the growth process, over which many golden-yellow inflorescences flaunt. This variety is suitable for stony gardens, garden paths and curbs. It should be noted a unique variety called Bremen. It boasts medium-sized plants that bear rather large inflorescences with crimson disc and burgundy-red marginal flowers with a yellowish border.

No less attention among gardeners and florists has won a variety called Tokajer, and it appeared relatively recently, but has already managed to win the hearts of many. It is distinguished by plants of medium height, over which rich orange large inflorescences rise. This variety is cultivated for making bouquets, it can also be used to decorate mixborders. Another variety that is striking in its beauty is Kobold. It is characterized by short stature and large baskets, the marginal flowers of which are golden yellow in color, and the disk flowers are dark yellow.

Growing features

In general, there are no difficulties in planting and caring for hybrid Gaillardia. Even beginners can handle this challenge. Most varieties and hybrids are unpretentious to soil conditions, the main thing is that they are cultivated, moderately moist, nutritious, loose and neutral. The culture will not tolerate community with strongly acidic, dense, heavy, poor and saline soils, on which plants will slow down in growth and will not show their rich and abundant flowering, and on some they will even die.

If we talk about the location, then hybrid Gaillardia is best placed in sunny or weakly shaded areas with diffused light. The thick shadow is not for them. In such areas, they will be attacked by harmful insects and all kinds of diseases, which will subsequently be very difficult to get rid of, and in some cases even impossible. Squall winds will also interfere with the plants, so when planting it is important to take care of protection, otherwise gusts of wind will break the peduncles, which are already sagging under the weight of large inflorescences.

Caring for Gaillardia hybrid is nothing unremarkable. But watering is especially important for plants, despite the fact that they are classified as drought-resistant. They should be watered regularly and in moderation, they will endure not too long drought without problems, however, decorativeness will decrease. Important for hybrid Gaillardia and feeding. They are carried out four times per season - in early spring, during the formation of buds, then during flowering and after cutting.
