Shrub aster (lat. Aster dumosus) - flowering decorative culture; a representative of the genus Astra of the family Compositae, or Astrovye. Is a native of the eastern regions of North America. It is actively used in horticulture. Suitable for decorating any areas. Also used to decorate large city parks, alleys and gardens. Highly decorative and easy to care for.
Characteristics of culture
Shrub aster is represented by perennial plants, not exceeding 100 cm in height, and forming erect, hemispherical or spherical rather branchy bushes with numerous stems, pubescent over the entire surface during the growth process. Stems bear sessile, dark green, solid, rough to the touch, lanceolate or elongated-oval foliage, jagged along the edge.
Inflorescences in the form of baskets, collected sparse scutes, consist of purple or white ligulate flowers and dark or yellow tubular flowers. In diameter, the inflorescences reach 3-5 cm (sometimes 7 cm, depending on the variety and climatic conditions). Aster shrub bloom is abundant and long, usually up to 40-45 days. Flowering begins in early - mid-August. Fruiting is active, annual.
The species is quite winter-hardy, easily tolerates cold winters, however, in snowless winters it needs high-quality shelter. The shrub aster has a negative attitude to drought, it also does not accept highly moist and acidic soils. To obtain abundant flowering, it is preferable to plant the plants in semi-shaded areas with alkaline, nutritious, moderately moist soils.
Shrub aster is an excellent material for landscaping gardens. It looks great both alone and in union with flower crops and cereals. In general, the considered type of aster is unpretentious, but care for it should be regular.
Common varieties
Currently, a wide variety of varieties and hybrids of aster shrubs are presented on the garden market. A group of hybrids called Dumosus is especially popular. This group of hybrids was obtained by crossing the New Belgian and bush asters. It is distinguished by a rich palette of inflorescences, flowering periods and other characteristics. Most of the representatives of this group do not exceed 40-60 cm in height.
The following varieties are common among gardeners:
* Kristina (Christina) - the variety is characterized by low-growing bushes up to 30 cm high with semi-double inflorescences consisting of yellow disc flowers and white or pinkish marginal flowers. The variety is distinguished by long and very abundant flowering and oblong emerald leaves. Blooms late, bloom does not occur until September and lasts until frost.
* Blue Berd (Blue Bird) - the variety is characterized by dwarf bushes, which do not exceed a height of 30 cm, with small inflorescences consisting of bluish-lilac marginal flowers and yellow tubular flowers.
* Woods purple (Woods purple) - the variety is characterized by low sun-loving bushes up to 50 cm high with baskets consisting of yellow disc flowers and pinkish-purple marginal flowers. It has an interesting feature - it often blooms twice.
* Venus (Venus) - the variety is characterized by carded bushes with rather small baskets, consisting of bright yellow tubular flowers and mauve marginal flowers. The variety is distinguished by abundant flowering.
* Jenny (Jenny) - the variety is characterized by low, highly branched bushes no more than 40 cm in height with small baskets consisting of red reed flowers. The variety boasts long and early flowering.
* Blue Bouaguef (Blue Boakuef) - the variety is characterized by hemispherical bushes up to 60 cm in height with small inflorescences, consisting of bluish-lilac marginal flowers and yellow tubular flowers.
* Alba flore plena (Alba flore Plena) - the variety is characterized by densely leafy bushes no more than 40-45 cm high with semi-double inflorescences consisting of bright yellow disc flowers and snow-white marginal flowers.
