New England aster (lat. Aster novae-angliae) - flowering decorative culture; a numerous representative of the genus Astra, belonging to the Asteraceae family, or Aster. It is one of the most common representatives of the genus, enjoying unprecedented popularity among gardeners and florists in Russia and European countries. The species in question is actively used in landscaping both personal backyards and summer cottages, and large city parks. The species was introduced into culture back in 1700. There are many hybrids and varieties of this species on the market today. The species is also found in nature. It grows both in Russia and in the United States.

Characteristics of culture

Aster New England is represented by perennial herbaceous plants, characterized by rather branched and pubescent stems over the entire surface, reaching a height of 1-2 m and forming sprawling bushes in the process of development and growth, covered with oblong lanceolate green foliage and inflorescences-baskets. Inflorescences reach 4-5 cm in diameter (there are also larger ones, which directly depends on the variety).

The inflorescences, in turn, are collected in large panicles, as a rule, they contain up to 30 baskets, consisting of small tubular flowers of purple, red or yellow color, and marginal flowers of pink, purple, lilac, purple or salmon color. The flowering of the New England aster is observed in early - mid-autumn, in the southern regions - the terms are extended until the end of November.

The species in question can be attributed to cold-resistant crops, plants, without prejudice to their growth and appearance, withstand frosts down to -5C. Astra New England is universal in terms of use. She will give zest to any site. It can be safely combined with other members of the genus and other decorative flowering crops. The plant is combined with ornamental shrubs and undersized trees. Also, New England aster is suitable for cutting. In bouquets and singly, they can stand in water for up to two weeks, subject to regular water changes.

Popular varieties

One of the most popular varieties among gardeners is Bars Pink (Bars Pink). They are ideal for landscaping gardens, looks great in group plantings and in autumn bouquets. It can also be planted in beds and along garden paths. Bars Pink is a lush, spreading bushes, the height of which does not exceed 1.5 m, with baskets of bright yellow disc and carmine reed flowers flaunting against the background of green foliage.

It is characterized by attractive highly branched bushes up to 1.5 m high, forming small numerous baskets with pink ligulate flowers, collected in racemose inflorescences. Also, you should not ignore the variety Constance (Constance). It is notable for its numerous baskets, which consist of brownish or yellowish disc flowers and lilac reed flowers. The baskets, in turn, are collected in large brushes, beautifully fluttering with a light breath of wind over tall, densely leafy bushes up to 1.5-2 m high. By the way, the variety is distinguished by high cold-resistant properties, but it cannot boast of long flowering - up to a maximum of 40 days …

Among gardeners, the Browmann variety is famous. It is characterized by plants that form highly branched, not too tall bushes, bearing small inflorescences, collected in dense graceful brushes. Baskets delight with purple or lilac reed flowers. The variety is ideal for creating bouquets and decorating lawns.

The variety Septemberrubin (Septemberrubin) has won an honorable place in the list of the most popular New England asters for its numerous baskets with rich reddish-pink marginal flowers that attract the eyes of others. They are perfectly combined with the green foliage of tall, spreading bushes, suitable for decorating various flower beds, including a rabat.
