Asparagus crescent sometimes also called curly asparagus. In Latin, the name of this plant sounds like this: Asparagus falcatus.
Description of crescent asparagus
The stems of this plant are endowed with hooked thorns. In natural conditions, such thorns are necessary in order to scare away herbivorous animals. In addition, such thorns also help the sickle-shaped asparagus to attach to those plants that grow nearby.
This plant is one of three hundred species of perennial evergreens and shrubs, and the sickle asparagus is part of the family of the same name. Under natural conditions, this plant is found in Sri Lanka, as well as in tropical and southeastern regions of Africa. However, this plant can grow in cooler conditions and can withstand about ten degrees of heat.
The plant is considered a relative of edible asparagus, this plant is endowed with rather narrow leaves. The leaves are nothing more than a kind of modified shoots, these leaves are collected in bunches of three to four pieces. Over time, such leaves will increase in size, and also lignify. In height, the plant can reach about ninety centimeters to one hundred twenty centimeters, while the diameter of the plant can reach sixty centimeters. Of course, in pots and at home, this plant will be smaller.
The plant forms inflorescences of small flowers that are distinguished by particularly delicate aromas. In place of such flowers, you can sometimes notice the appearance of brown berries. Over time, the white roots of the plant begin to lignify and become very similar to the roots of a radish. These roots store water and nutrients, for the same reason, asparagus sickle is able to tolerate drought perfectly. It is recommended to leave sufficient space during planting and transplanting so that these roots can develop normally.
Care and cultivation of sickle asparagus
It is recommended to grow this plant in bright places, which should be protected from intense sunlight. At the same time, the plant will also feel great in the shade. Asparagus crescent is not particularly picky about the soil, it needs a rather large pot, in which there will be enough space for the roots of the plant.
Asparagus crescent should be planted in fertile clay soil, which is intended for potted plants. During the period of active growth of the plant, it is recommended to carefully monitor that the soil always remains moist. In winter, during the dormant period, sickle asparagus should be watered much less often, especially in those plants that grow in cool conditions. Older stems look rather unattractive, for this reason it is recommended to cut them off, and young shoots will appear in their place over time.
Throughout the entire period, from March to September, it is recommended to water the sickle asparagus extremely abundantly, while the soil should be very well moistened. The next watering will be required only when the soil dries out. For the rest of the time, watering should be reduced and made more economical. During the period of active growth, the plant should be regularly fed once every two weeks. In winter, crescent asparagus will not need feeding.
If you grow the plant in very warm rooms, then you will need to carefully maintain a fairly high air humidity, while for cool rooms it is recommended to significantly reduce watering.
