Alpine aquilegia (lat. Aquilegia alpina) - bright and attractive, abundantly flowering plant; a common species of the genus Aquilegia of the Buttercup family. In nature, the plant lives in European countries, predominantly in the western regions. Typical habitats are rocks and plain meadows. The species is not used very actively in ornamental gardening, despite the high ornamental properties of plants. Their rich color literally transforms the site and gives it an attractive appearance.
Characteristics of the species
Alpine aquilegia is represented by plants reaching a height of 30-40 cm. In cultivation, plants can reach a height of 60-80 cm, but only with proper care and optimal soil conditions. The flowers in this species are very bright, they can be rich blue, blue or purple in color. The flowers are equipped with short spurs, which give the plants a special zest. Typically, the spurs are curved at the tips. Alpine aquilegia blooms in mid - late summer, while most species of the genus Aquilegia bloom in late spring or early summer. The type is decorative, can be used to decorate rock gardens, mixborders and ridges. Plants, by the way, are suitable for making dry crafts.
Growing conditions
Alpine aquilegia belongs to the category of demanding plants. Abundant flowering is achievable only with good care and optimal climatic conditions. The culture prefers fertile loamy and sandy soils. Heavy, clayey, acidic, saline and waterlogged soils are not suitable for the cultivation of alpine aquilegia. Semi-shaded or sunny areas for cultivation are preferable, dense shade is highly undesirable, in such areas, plants often get sick and are attacked by pests. In addition, aquilegia practically does not bloom in the shade. Another important condition for growing crops is protection from strong and cold winds, they can break the thin stems of plants.
Features of sowing and planting in the ground
Reproduction of the culture is most often done by seed, since it allows you to get the most spectacular plants that boast abundant flowering and active growth. Sowing freshly harvested seeds is carried out in autumn or spring. By the way, the culture is distinguished by its ability to self-seed, therefore, in the spring, when sprouting sprouts, excess specimens should be removed. When planting aquilegia in the ground, it must first be fertilized with rotted organic matter, for example, humus, and complex mineral fertilizer. The level of soil digging is also important. Dig a site for plants to a depth of at least 25-30 cm.
Pests and diseases
With systematic care and favorable growing conditions, alpine aquilegia is resistant to diseases and pests. If the rules of care and other negative factors are not followed, plants may undergo spotting, rust, powdery mildew and gray rot - diseases that require immediate intervention, otherwise the death of aquilegia cannot be avoided.
Among insects for culture, the most dangerous are spider mites, scoops and leafworms. She can also be bothered by aphids. When the first signs of damage are found, it is very important to take action. Prevention of diseases and pests will serve as a slight loosening of the soil, moderate watering and removal of weeds, which, by the way, take away useful substances from the plant, in view of which the plants suffer from a lack of nutrients, and, accordingly, slow down in growth and bloom worse.
