Agrostemma ordinary (lat. Agrostemma githago) - flowering culture; a representative of the genus Agrostemma of the Clove family. Other names are sowing agrostemma, sowing cockle, common cockle. It occurs naturally in the temperate zone of Eurasia. It is actively used in landscape design, despite the small number of species, forms and varieties. Gardeners love sowing agrostemma for its unpretentiousness, extraordinary beauty and rich inflorescences, which in appearance resemble butterflies.
Characteristics of culture
Agrostemma vulgaris is represented by plants up to 60 cm in height with strongly branched stems, dotted with opposite narrow leaves, covered over the entire surface with gray tomentose pubescence, against which single, funnel-shaped, purple, lilac-pink, light purple or lilac-purple flowers flaunt diameter 1.5-5 cm. Flowers are equipped with long pedicels and are formed in the axils of the leaves. Agrostemma vulgaris has one interesting feature, its flowers open in the early morning at sunrise, and close in the afternoon. The fruits of the species in question are formed in large quantities, they contain small poisonous seeds that remain viable for up to 3-4 years.
There are few varieties of Agrostemma ordinary, but they are all popular among gardeners and florists, and even beginners who do not understand anything in this matter. And this is not surprising, without spending a lot of time on leaving, you can get magnificent glades of lilac or purple "butterflies" that will attract with their beauty the people passing by. Among the most common varieties are: Rose Queen - the variety is represented by low plants with pink-purple flowers up to 3-4 cm in diameter; Milas - the variety is represented by plants up to 50 cm in height with large flowers of a pale lilac color, reaching a diameter of 4-5 cm; Ocean Pearl - the variety is represented by plants with white flowers.
Care features
As already mentioned, ordinary agrostemma, or sowing, cannot be called a demanding crop. It will accept almost any soil, except for heavy clay, saline, waterlogged and highly acidic. The location for plants is preferably sunny, well warmed up by the sun. Under optimal growing conditions, the agrostemma actively develops and blooms profusely, moreover, it is not affected by pests and diseases, therefore prophylactic treatments against them disappear.
The culture is not sensitive to drought, but in extreme heat it needs watering, however, in the morning or evening hours. It is desirable for tall varieties to provide support, since the stems under the weight of the flowers can lie on the ground. By the way, it is better to plant agrostemma in unbranched areas, this approach will also prevent lodging. Top dressing of the culture is not required; if necessary, you can add a little compost to the soil (before planting). The common agrostemma is propagated only by seeds, this feature is typical for all annuals.
Sowing is carried out in the spring directly into the open ground. It is not forbidden to sow before winter. And in fact, and in another case, the germination rate will be high. It is not recommended to harvest seeds for future use; it is better to collect them annually. Agrostemma emerges amicably one to two weeks after sowing. The optimum temperature during this period is 13-15C. With the appearance of 2 true leaves on the shoots, thinning is carried out, leaving a distance of 20-25 cm between the plants.
Usage
Agrostemma ordinary - a highly decorative plant, it will fit into any flower garden, be it a rabatka, a flower bed or a mixborder, it will also look great in group compositions on the lawn. Agrostemma is also suitable for cutting, the plants stand in vases for up to 6-7 days. In alliance with other unpretentious flower crops, cereals and herbs, agrostemma will be appropriate on a Moorish lawn. It should be noted that this variety has medicinal properties, it is used in folk medicine as a healing agent against furunculosis, helminthic invasion and open wounds.
