Few will be left indifferent by a weekend outside the city, in the country. However, many have an acute question of whether to take pets with them, because sometimes there is no way to leave them in the city. On the one hand, it is more fun and calmer with animals, on the other hand, encountering wildlife is fraught with some dangers. Everyone knows that there are viruses and infections that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Not only a stray or wild animal, but also a domestic pet can become a victim and carrier. Diseases that are transmitted from animals to humans are called "zoonoses" or "zooanthroponoses"

Zoonoses to be aware of

Rabies

This disease is one of the known zooanthroponoses. Rabies is a terrible, fatal disease caused by a neurotropic virus that is transmitted through saliva when bitten by an infected animal. The rabies virus causes encephalitis - inflammation of the brain in animals and humans, destroys nerve cells and causes irreversible damage in the body.

Sources of infection. Carriers of this terrible disease can be stray pets, as well as wild animals. It can be hedgehogs, squirrels, foxes and others, as it might seem at first glance, harmless animals. It is worth noting that it is the saliva of an infected animal that is dangerous, therefore, even after avoiding a bite, simply getting dirty with saliva, you should pay attention to this.

Precautionary measures. To avoid infection, contact with wild and stray animals should be avoided. If you want to tame a stray animal and take it home, you should observe its behavior and external condition for some time. According to external signs, it is most often not noticeable whether the animal is sick, since the virus begins to manifest itself 3-14 days after infection, and in cats, sometimes, this disease is asymptomatic.

Treatment. Animals suspected of having rabies are quarantined for 40 days. If during this time the animal survived, then it is healthy. If the animal is infected, then after 40 days it dies. For humans, this disease is also fatal, therefore, immediately after contact with a suspicious animal, after a bite or salivation, the rabies vaccine should be administered.

Leptospirosis

An infectious disease caused by a bacterium from the genus Leptospira affects the capillaries, kidneys, liver, and muscles. Both animals (except for cats) and people are susceptible to this disease.

Sources of infection. The infection is transmitted in the urine and enters the body mainly with water. Pigs, cows, rats, mice living near farms can infect water.

Precautionary measures. Swimming in water bodies near farms should be avoided, this applies to both animals and people. Stagnant ponds should be avoided. Dogs and other animals that visit the street should be vaccinated against leptospirosis, and care should be taken to ensure that animals do not drink from old puddles and ponds.

Symptoms diseases appear on day 2-5. The animal becomes lethargic, loses its appetite, diarrhea and vomiting are observed, sometimes mixed with blood. If a person becomes infected, then his temperature rises, chills and general weakness appear.

Treatment. At the first sign of leptospirosis, a blood test should be taken and, based on the results, the veterinarian will prescribe antibiotics. In order to avoid death, treatment must be started no later than 4 days after the onset of the disease. A person with this disease should immediately seek help from a doctor.

Ringworm

This disease is caused by various types of fungi.

Sources of infection. You can get infected from animals with weak immunity, since these fungi are always present on the skin and wool, and their activity begins during the weakening of the body. Ringworm mainly affects old, chronically ill and unsanitary animals. This disease can be present in both stray pets and wild animals.

Symptoms Round or ring-shaped red or grayish patches appear on the skin and become crusted. As a rule, the stain is very itchy. Animals in these places lose their hair.

The main

precautionary measure from infection with shingles - this is not to touch a suspicious animal with your hands. Basically, the carriers of this disease look frayed, they may lack hair in different places.

Treatment. Nowadays, there are many ways to effectively treat lichen, both in animals and in humans. The main thing is not to delay the start of treatment, but to immediately contact your veterinarian and doctor for qualified help. Also, animals can be vaccinated against some types of this fungus.

Helminthiasis

A disease caused by helminths - parasitic worms, whose habitat is the body of an animal or human.

Sources of infection. Raw meat (especially offal), game, freshwater fish. Animals can also get helminthiasis from dirty grass, soil, or the faeces of infected animals. Also, mice and other wild animals that can be caught by pets can be a source.

Precautionary measures. Wash hands and food thoroughly, avoid raw food, handle and sort food thoroughly before cooking and eating. Animals should be given anthelmintic drugs every 3-6 months.

Symptoms In animals and humans, the symptoms of the disease are similar: weakness, decreased or increased appetite, weight loss, diarrhea, and bloating.

Helminthiasis is treated with medication.

It is sad, but some doctors, sometimes, cannot, or diagnose this or that disease at the wrong time. Therefore, you need to know the enemy by sight. This will help prevent or start treating zoonosis in time. About 150 diseases are known that are transmitted from animals to humans, about 30 of them are found in Russia and countries similar in climate and mentality. Most zooanthroponoses are found in hot countries, as well as where it is not accepted or not possible to vaccinate and carefully monitor hygiene.
