The harvest harvested at the summer cottage is reliably sheltered from bad weather and winter cold. Something is twisted and put into the cells of the freezing units; something is rolled up in cans of different calibers, having gone through hot processing, or having absorbed salt and the smells of spices; and potatoes, carrots, beets nestled comfortably in the bins of cellars and cellars. Now you can safely wait for the winter blizzards. Have you forgotten to take care of your feathered assistants, who have not yet learned how to build basements and cellars for themselves?
Increasingly, the sky is filled with flocks of migratory birds, hurrying to leave us before the onset of stable frosts. They fly to distant countries, where there is eternal summer and there are no problems with food. But many birds are devoted to the places in which they were born and raised. They are not attracted by the Turkish coast and Africa with the hot rays of the sun. They stay with us and believe that we will not leave them to their fate in the fierce and snowy weeks.
Hunger is not aunt
Birds have two problems in winter: cold and hunger.
But, if nature protected them from the cold, rewarding their body with a special structure and metabolism, then only a person can help the birds to stock up on a good layer of fat under the skin, which will warm them in cold weather.
Indeed, in the cold season, the birds' need for food increases, and in the conditions of a snowy winter, it is very difficult for birds to find food on their own. This is where a person can come to the rescue by building simple feeders and regularly replenishing them with food.
A lesson in kindness and responsibility
The device of feeders for feathered friends benefits not only birds, but also people. By involving children, we teach them kindness and responsibility.
You can even tame the birds and feed them by hand, observe their life, arrange a photo hunt, replenishing your photo albums or exhibitions on the Internet with funny or instructive pictures.
Poultry diet
Among birds, as well as among people, there are vegetarians and meat-eaters.
Vegetarians include the ubiquitous sparrows, siskins, greenfinches, tap dancers. They will happily dine in a trough filled with oats, millet, or other grains from your kitchen supplies. Cereals, bread crumbs, whisked by us into the trash bin, turn into a treat for birds in the feeder. And for goldfinches, siskins and tap dancers, birch and alder seeds will be a delicacy.
Meat-eaters include titmice, woodpeckers, nuthatches. Although titmouses will happily nibble on bread crumbs and cereals, meat or lard (moreover, lard should be fresh, not salty), pieces of butter or cheese will give them greater pleasure. They will also like cockroaches, crickets, ant eggs or mealworms, which we, barely seeing, rush to pour into the bin. All birds love to eat sunflower seeds, which should be crushed before serving.
A special treat for special guests
For the most elegant birds visiting the feeders, such as: red-breasted bullfinches, fieldbirds, waxwings, you need to take care of the food reserves in advance.
Dried berries of hawthorn and mountain ash; ash and maple seeds; the seeds of weed grasses, with which we desperately fight throughout the summer season, such as nettles, quinoa, burdock burdock, horse sorrel, will turn into winter delicacies for feathered beauties. Waxwingers, for example, will like the berries of red and black elderberry, viburnum and honeysuckle.
Feeder requirements
• The presence of sides, so that the food does not crumble or go to waste.
• The presence of a roof that protects the feed from natural precipitation.
• The entrance hole should give free entry and exit from the "establishment", it is better if there are several of them.
• The strength of the attachment of the feeder, protecting it from falling along with all the contents.
Protecting feeders from enemies
Feeders should be suspended so that cats and dogs cannot reach them.
If the feeder is made for small birds, then the entrance must be made narrow so that larger birds cannot get there.
Pieces of bacon and meat should not be laid out, but suspended. Then crows and jackdaws will not be able to feast on the treat, and dexterous titmouses will be able to hang on a piece and feast on them.
And do not forget that rye bread is contraindicated for birds, like salted bacon.
