Grateful Spathiphyllum

The indoor flower Spathiphyllum looks like a romantic ship with numerous green oars, white sails and antennae-inflorescences. A plant born in the tropics, in favorable conditions, feels great on Russian windowsills and responds to the grower with gratitude, rewarding with tremendous aesthetic pleasure

Genus Spathiphyllum

More than three dozen plant evergreen tropical species are combined into a genus

Spathiphyllum (Spathiphyllum) family

Aroid … With their relatives by family, plants of the genus

Anthurium, we have already met, and therefore the inflorescence

Spathiphyllum with its protective veil will seem familiar to us.

Naturally, related plants have similar features, but if botanists have divided them into different genera, then there are differences. While Anthuriums are more often epiphytes, that is, they can do without soil, extracting nutrients from the air, heavenly moisture and sunlight, the Spathiphyllums prefer to live on earth, although epiphytes occur among them.

The stem of Spathiphyllum has evolved into a short underground rhizome, from which basal leaves on elongated petioles immediately rise to the surface.

As indoor plants, hybrids obtained from a natural species are grown today, Spathiphyllum Wallisborn in the tropics of Colombia.

Wallis Spathiphyllum

Wallis Spathiphyllum (Spathiphyllum wallisii) is a short plant with leaves shaped like boat oars, giving the plant the appearance of a fairy ship that brings happiness to women, albeit under white sails. Moreover, white is a symbol of a meeting.

Decorativeness and monumentality to the bright green large leaves of the plant give a glossy surface and pronounced veins, and the wavy edge brings softness and charm to them. So in one plant masculinity and femininity are combined, capable of working miracles together.

As a sail, there are bracts white sheets-bedspreads, in which nature carefully and carefully wrapped the inflorescences-cobs, collected from round small creamy white flowers. As the ear ripens, its white color changes to green. The bracts also turn green. Flowering lasts a long period, which makes it possible to use the inflorescences for cutting and decorating flower bouquets.

Growing

A thermophilic plant in our harsh conditions is grown only as a houseplant. It is popular in various institutions, since it is believed that Spathiphyllum is able to have a beneficial effect on human performance by regulating the humidity and cleanliness of the air in the room.

You can grow Spathiphyllum hydroponically, or in the usual way, planting the plant in peat soil. The plant in the humid tropics requires abundant watering and leaf spraying, which is reduced in winter. Adequate watering should be combined with a good drainage system. In the spring-summer period, mineral fertilizers are added to the water for irrigation every decade. In winter, one top dressing every 30 days is enough.

For Spathiphyllum, partial shade is more suitable, since direct sunlight provokes burns on the leaves. But in winter it is better for the plant to select the most illuminated place.

With the growth of rhizomes for Spathiphyllum, a capacity is selected more freely and in the spring they are transplanted into a new "house".

The appearance of the plant is maintained by wiping the surface of the leaves with a damp swab, and the faded inflorescences and wilted leaves are removed.

Reproduction

Reproduction of Spathiphyllum is a very simple procedure. In the spring, instead of replanting the plant in a large container, they divide the bush, grabbing a piece of rhizome to each part to be separated.

By planting the resulting bushes in different pots filled with loose peat soil on top of the drainage layer, they provide new plants with a comfortable temperature of plus 20 degrees.

Enemies

Although Spathiphyllum is distinguished by enviable resistance to external enemies, it can still be attacked by ticks, worms and aphids.
