Cereals for floristry - we grow ourselves

Cereals stand out for their decorative qualities and are in demand for decorating compositions and arranging bouquets. They create volume, softness of outlines, bring originality, give a special flavor. Lovers of floristry often have a question where to get such beautiful plant elements. If you have a summer cottage, you can grow cereals yourself for use in work and decorate the site

What are cereals

The Cereal family has more than 12 thousand varieties, with a predominance of perennials, with the exception of all cultivated species: oats, rice, corn, millet, wheat, etc. Cereals grow everywhere on all continents, occupy the bulk of the phytomass in savannas and steppes.

Perennial species have loose bush forms, and annual species are distinguished by an unbranched, erect, hollow straw-shaped stem. Growth ends with a weevil fruit: panicle, ear, spikelet, sultan. The height ranges from a few centimeters to several meters.

Where to plant cereals

All varieties of cereals tend to overwhelm the surrounding vegetation. Therefore, it is important to know the characteristics of the selected plant: growth height, coverage area of the root mass, volume of the aboveground part. With the right balance of individual characteristics, care requirements, you can easily grow the plants you like, and with a successful layout, make amazingly beautiful zones on the site. The decorativeness of cereals is often used in landscape design. The most common cultivation methods are flower beds and flower beds.

The monastery garden is the most convenient and simple option

The cultivation of cereals in separate rectangular ridges of the "monastery garden" type is considered the most optimal way of cultivation. With this option, it is possible to determine the zones for each type of plants, to improve the conditions for agrotechnical measures. The paths between the "plantations" prevent the spontaneity of growth, create conveniences for weeding, loosening, watering, fertilizing.

Alpine slides, rabatki

It is convenient to carry out cultivation activities in places intended for cultivated plants, therefore, the right solution would be to allocate space in flower beds, rabatkas, alpine slides. Cereals can be placed along the paths or, to create a design, find a place next to the recreation area, allocate an area on the lawn.

How to distribute and group cereals

Getting started with cereals involves choosing the variety and location. In any case, you need to adhere to the main rules for breeding cereals: grouping according to the class of growth. There are three categories: short, tall and medium. You also need to take into account the ratio among cereals according to the principle of vegetation (perennial with annuals). We suggest that you familiarize yourself with the most common types that are used in floristry.

Low-growing species of cereals

Plants with a maximum height of up to 40 cm belong to the class of undersized, ideal for decorating small areas. Optimal applications are curbs, alpine slides, rocky gardens. For this purpose, cereals that grow well with ground cover crops are recommended.

Gray fescue is a perennial plant, has the shape of a low bush (within 20 cm), bluish needle-like leaves and inflorescences in the form of red panicles. Differs in delicate decorativeness, grows well in sunny places. The cereal is frost-resistant, sown in spring and before winter, quickly takes root and grows. Every two years, the formation of a bush is required by truncating and dividing the rhizome.

Meadow foxtail has an underdeveloped root system, does not spread, does not require transplantation and division. It has a bushy appearance, with a golden leaf mass. Blooms in July and forms a cascading silky spikelet.

Kiliomarginate sedge is known for its wide foliage, collected in a bush-like shape. Looks beautiful in all seasons.

Kaleria is gray. The height does not exceed 10 cm, there is an external resemblance to a hillock of a bluish hue. It has small foliage comparable to dense fluff, ideal for decorating flower beds and lawns.

The pinnacle is valued for its fluffy white-pink panicles, it is harmonious when cultivated with catnip and goldenrod.

Canary or falyaris canary is recommended to be planted in a sunny place with cornflowers, chamomiles. It has colorful striped foliage, the peduncle has the shape of elongated cones.

Fountain grass or bristle is a fast-growing plant with a tubular stem ending in caudate spikelets. It is sown by seeds in May. Differs in decorativeness throughout the summer and autumn.

Tall varieties of cereal plants (over 100 cm)

Sharp-flowered reed is famous for its pink panicles, it decorates well the background of any flower garden. Grows well in partial shade and in the sun. When planting, you should take into account the aggressive spread, therefore, it is required to plant it in a container to fix the growth of roots.

African millet is an annual with interesting burgundy leaves. It is always planted in the background of any compositions in the form of a single powerful bush.
