Who will not be pleased with such good luck in the forest as finding a fruitful bush or a hazelnut tree. But why annual walks for nuts, if you have your own personal plot where you can plant seedlings. It will give a special charm to the decorative appearance of the garden, and will provide it with a valuable nutritious product. After all, a nut is one of the richest in useful nutrients
Conditions for growing hazelnuts
It would seem that if a hazelnut grows in the forest without any care, then in the garden it is also unpretentious to growing conditions. However, we must not forget that in the wild, plants are distributed in a favorable environment for them. And you need to work hard to find or create such on your personal plot.
In particular, dry sandy soil composition or too wet soil will be unsuitable conditions for the nut. The plant is considered frost-resistant, however, so that frost cracks do not appear on it, it is better to plant it on the western or eastern side of capital buildings. When it comes to lighting, hazelnut is pretty shade-tolerant. However, if you intend to get a rich harvest, the plant needs to be provided with good lighting.
Vegetative breeding methods for hazelnut
Hazelnuts are best propagated vegetatively. For this, the so-called method of "seeding" of the kidneys is practiced. To produce it, grooves with a depth of no more than 5 cm are arranged near the bush. 2-year-old shoots are laid in them, without separating them from the mother plant. It is desirable that they be at least 1.5 m long. Then the stems are fixed in the recess.
In this position, the shoots from the awakened buds begin to grow upward. When their height surpasses the 10 cm mark, the shoots are ground for the first time with a fertile soil mixture with a layer of at least 5 cm. It will be necessary to huddle the future planting material again as soon as the shoots become approximately 25-30 cm in height. Rooting takes place already in the current year. And in the same season, it will be possible to separate them from the mother bush in order to transplant them into a nursery for growing seedlings.
It is not difficult to propagate hazelnuts with the help of root shoots. They are formed in large numbers already in the 2nd year of your pet's life. To do this, loosen the ground under the bush and carefully separate the growth with its own root system.
To get self-rooted plants, you can do green cuttings at the beginning of summer. For this, cuttings are taken from actively growing shoots on two-year-old branches. It is recommended to treat them with a root formation stimulant, and then leave them to root in artificial fog. This will save them from overheating, eliminate the need for shading and maintain optimal humidity.
Planting a seedling in a permanent place and forming a bush
It is good when there is an opportunity to pour a layer of soil from under the hazel at the bottom of the planting pit. Two seedlings can be placed in one hole at once. The plant is buried so that the root collar is about 5 cm underground.
After planting, it is recommended to prune the seedling at a height of about 15-25 cm. About 3-5 buds should remain on it. In the future, until the nut is 3 years old, only sanitary pruning is done. During this period, the bush will be enriched with coppice shoots. Of these, the ten strongest are left. The rest are trying to be removed so that those remaining in the footprint are located in a circle.
Every year, only a couple of the best are left from the new growth. And the aging branches are removed from the bush - the main criterion for this is the loss of productivity. A nut begins to bring a good harvest already at 4-5 years of age. The most productive twigs are between 10 and 20 years old.
