Fans of indoor cultivation of exotic plants will no doubt appreciate such a plant as persimmon. Among the Turkic peoples, this name means "pleasant", "sweet", which very accurately describes the taste of the fruit of the tree. In the Latin version, the plant is called diospyros, which means "food of the gods." This name testifies to the highest appreciation of the ancient peoples, sophisticated in culinary delights. And today, the fruits of the plant, worthy of the table of the celestials of ancient Roman mythology, can be grown by any ordinary person in indoor conditions
Features of persimmon
Persimmon came to our latitudes from eastern countries. It is not surprising that this representative of the East is famous as one of the longest living record holders. For example, persimmon trees have been discovered in China, which are estimated to be approximately four to five centuries old.
Persimmon is not an evergreen. Nevertheless, it has certain decorative qualities and can serve as a striking element of the interior. The crown of the plant formed on the trunk is covered with dense foliage of a beautiful form with a rich green color. After the leaves fall, the branches are still adorned with whole clusters of large, bright orange berries.
The fruits of the plant contain a large amount of nutrients and useful elements. At the same time, we must not forget that they contain tannin. And for this reason, persimmons should be refrained from in the postoperative period, with some diseases of the abdominal organs. The highest content of tannins is observed in unripe berries.
Persimmon propagation
Persimmons can be propagated in different ways: by seeds, cuttings, grafting. It is a relatively early maturing plant, especially considering the tree's lifespan. On average, a grafted tree begins to bear fruit already in 3-4 years, and grown from a seed - in about 5-7 years.
Planting seeds, and in fact seeds, is carried out both in indoor greenhouses and in pots. Sowing is planned for the spring months or in the fall. For this, wet sand is used. In the case when planting is carried out in pots, the containers are covered with glass, transparent film.
Seedlings are transplanted no earlier than they reach a height of 30 cm. Inoculation with a cuttings can be carried out when the stems become about 0.7-1 cm in diameter.
Cuttings for grafting begin to be harvested in the last weeks of winter, while the persimmon is dormant. Until the operation, they are left in the refrigerator, where they will be perfectly preserved at a temperature of 0 … + 2 degrees C.
An important point in the vaccination process is the content of tannins. The more tannins are contained at this moment, the worse the graft will take root. Therefore, one should not miss the moment of sap flow in early spring. It is on these days that the tannin content is minimal.
Conditions of detention and care for persimmon
Persimmon belongs to the group of light-loving plants. In the shade, the tree bears fruit more modestly. At the same time, it is considered an unpretentious plant. Persimmon is not capricious with regard to indoor humidity and soil fertility. However, it should be remembered that lime in the soil is harmful to the tree.
After leaf fall, it is recommended to keep a pot with a tree at a temperature of + 3 … + 5 degrees C. At the same time, neither fertilizing nor watering is carried out. So that the earthy lump does not dry out, they resort to such a technique as mulching with wet sawdust. This protective layer should be regularly sprayed with water.
In a warm room, the condition of the soil must be maintained in a moderately moist state. It is also useful to spray the crown.
Top dressing is carried out as soon as the buds begin to turn into leaves. Organic fertilizers alternate with mineral fertilizers every 2 weeks.
