Isolepis (lat. Isolepis) - a plant from the Sedge family, once isolated from the genus Kamysh.

Description

Isolepis is interesting in that it can be both a perennial and an annual, as well as a rhizome plant, or not. This moisture-loving herbaceous turfy beauty is endowed with thin cylindrical stems, and its filiform basal leaves can be either rudimentary or superior in height to the stems. Inflorescences in isolepis are usually apical, sometimes spikelet, or capitate, or pseudo-lateral. All of them are formed by one or three spikelets (maximum fifteen) and are dotted with bracts directed upward (one or two). Each spikelet consists of scales arranged spirally around the flowers, the number of which can vary from eight to twenty-five. Outwardly, this plant is very similar to juicy grass.

The bisexual miniature flowers of isolepis are characterized by the absence of perianths and a pleasant creamy color. All of them include from one to three stamens and are endowed with columns slightly thickening near the bases. These bizarre flowers are formed at the tips of the shoots of the handsome Isolepis.

The fruits of this plant are either triangular or biconvex achenes, which are longitudinally ribbed or triangular.

Where grows

Isolepis is a plant widespread in warm temperate or tropical regions. Especially often you can encounter it in Australia or in Africa.

Usage

Isolepis is ideal for planting on the shores of all kinds of water bodies, and its miniature varieties, which grow beautifully in the water, will be an excellent decor for aquariums. Sometimes it is also grown as a potted plant indoors, however, in this case, you will have to attend to the constant maintenance of the humidity of the air and soil at a sufficiently high level.

Growing and caring

To grow a beautiful isolepis in the coastal zone, you will have to look for swampy soils. If you plan to cultivate it in aquariums, you need to get solid soil. And if isolepis will be grown in pots, you will need to purchase clay containers and a fertile clay mixture.

Isolepis needs quite intense lighting, but directly incident sunlight will be far from the most suitable option in this case.

When growing isolepis, it is important to ensure that the soil is constantly well moistened. This handsome man is watered very abundantly, two to three times a week throughout the year. This feature makes Isolepis not the most suitable plant for growing in hanging baskets. As for spraying, they are necessary for Isolepis daily, and when hot weather is established, it will not hurt to spray it twice a day.

About once every three weeks, this plant is fed with good fertilizers, bred in full accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. If isolepis grows in a room with room temperature, then this feeding regime is adhered to all year round.

In winter, Isolepis is able to withstand rather low temperatures - even eight degrees of heat is unlikely to destroy it. However, the most optimal temperature is still considered to be about thirteen degrees. If the thermometer does not drop to minimum values, then the handsome Isolepis will delight with his continuous growth. If the air temperature reaches twenty-four degrees or more, you will have to take care of increasing the air humidity.

Isolepis is transplanted ideally every six months. In this case, it is best to transplant it not into a common large pot, but into a couple of separate pots, dividing the bush in half. If the plant begins to grow especially actively, its stems with roots are divided into two parts. And in order for them to be able to root in the new soil as quickly and better as possible, the pots with the transplanted plant are left in the shade for a couple of days without watering.
