Roundwort (lat. Cercidiphyllum) - a light-loving woody plant, which is a representative of the Bagryannikovye family. Other names are scarlet or gingerbread tree.
Description
Roundwort is a rather spectacular deciduous tree. Its opposite leaves have a very attractive round-ovoid shape.
The small flowers of the roundwort, devoid of perianths, are characterized by an irregular shape and are collected in fancy brushes or bunches. The round-leaf flowers, alas, do not have sepals, let alone petals. As a rule, the flowering of this handsome man either precedes the process of formation of young leaves, or coincides with it. And the fruits of this plant look like luxurious prefabricated leaflets. Cracking over time, they release many miniature seeds into free flight.
In total, the genus of roundwort has only two varieties of relict plants. By the way, round-leaf is often confused with no less attractive cercis, but in fact they are completely different plants - they are representatives not only of different families, but also of different genera. In principle, it is not so difficult to distinguish the cercis from the round-leaf - the leaves of the round-leaf are always opposite, while the leaves of the cercis are exclusively alternate.
Where grows
More than eighty million years ago, roundwort could be found in very vast North American and Eurasian territories, but now its habitat has somewhat narrowed - now it can be found in large quantities only in Chinese or Japanese deciduous forests. In addition, roundwort grows in the Mediterranean, in the North American expanses, as well as in East and Southeast Asia.
Usage
For breeders, round-leaved is of particular interest as a spectacular park tree, which is ideal for creating magnificent compositional groups, and for planting both in single and in group plantings. In the fall, the foliage of this amazing plant acquires not only incredibly spectacular and completely incomparable shades, but also an impressive spicy aroma - it is for this that the inhabitants of Germany call the round-leaved "gingerbread tree". By the way, just before it starts to fall off, the round-leaf foliage smells even stronger and nicer! And another no less interesting feature - the aroma of these trees can change depending on the shape of their crowns (for trees with umbrella crowns it will be one, for specimens with conical crowns - another, and for round-leaf with funnel-shaped crowns - a third). At the same time, some trees may have more pronounced honey notes, others - cinnamon, and still others - very peculiar notes of burnt sugar.
Growing and caring
Smooth sunny areas are considered the most suitable for growing roundwort, while it should be borne in mind that with the onset of spring, the trunks of young seedlings may be damaged. As for the soils, the roundwort will feel best on fertile soils with sufficient moisture, which are characterized by a weakly acidic or neutral reaction.
If the weather is too dry, the roundwort will need regular watering. Also in the spring season, it is recommended to feed the trees with full mineral fertilizers. Sometimes the roundwort is also cut off, removing dried and diseased branches from the plants. And its reproduction is carried out both by seeds sown with the onset of autumn, and by winter cuttings or layering.
