Crocus sometimes also called saffron. This crop belongs to perennial plants that bloom in the spring, however, there are some species that will bloom in the fall. It is noteworthy that the plant can be grown not only in room culture, but also outdoors. Even though the crocus bloom is rather short-lived, this plant is enviable among gardeners all over the world.

Crocus care and cultivation

For optimal growth of this plant, it is recommended to select sunny areas with fairly well-drained soil. The plant is distinguished by a special love for the sun, however, with all this, the plant will be able to thrive even in partial shade conditions. It is noteworthy that the plant is not particularly demanding to care for, you only need to loosen and weed the soil, and also lightly water the soil from time to time. This plant is very resistant to drought, and during the entire dormant period, crocus will not need watering. Nevertheless, it is important not to allow even the slightest stagnation of water, which also applies to waterlogging of the soil after rain. This is due to the fact that excessive soil moisture can lead to the fact that the corms of the plant begin to rot. As for dressing, it is recommended to use both organic and mineral fertilizers. The first top dressing will be required for this plant even before the start of growth, but the next top dressing should be performed after the crocus flowering ends.

For the winter period of time, the crocus will need to provide a small shelter; for example, fallen leaves can play this role. Such a shelter is necessary until the first frost. Quite often, this plant is grown in containers: after the end of the flowering period, the containers should be placed in a cool room that will be quite dark. In this place, containers are stored throughout the winter. About once every three to four years, the crocus will need a transplant.

It should be noted that the stigmas and corms of this plant are edible. This applies to the following species of this plant: autumn-flowering crocus and sowing crocus. In the event that the plant is grown for the collection of stigmas, it is important to be especially careful. This is due to the fact that crocuses can be confused with crocuses, which are poisonous. The main difference is that crocuses have three stamens, while crocuses will have six of them.

Crocus propagation

Reproduction of this plant can occur both through children and with the help of seeds and corms. Reproduction and transplantation of this plant must be performed during the dormant period. This usually happens in the middle of summer: during this period, the ground part of the plant already dies off. As for the time of planting the corms, this will completely depend on the time of flowering of the crocus. Those plants that bloom in the spring period of time should be planted in open ground around September. The same plants that will start flowering in the fall should be planted in August. Before the corms are planted, they should be kept in a room that will not only be well ventilated, but which will also be quite cool. Crocus corms should be planted to a depth of about eight centimeters, while the distance between plantings should be about three to ten centimeters.

Sowing seeds must be carried out in the autumn period directly in the open ground. The seeds are deepened by one centimeter. When choosing a propagation method by means of seeds, the flowering of this plant will begin after two to three years.
