Coreopsis should be classified as perennial plants, but sometimes there are also annual species of this plant. In height, coreopsis can reach about one meter, however, there are also some undersized varieties, the height of which will not exceed thirty centimeters.
This plant is characterized by a rather bright flowering, which will be not only abundant, but also long-lasting. This flower is especially valuable due to its very bright flowers, colored in orange and yellow, as well as white and pink.
Care and cultivation of coreopsis
It is believed that a plant such as coreopsis is quite unpretentious to care for. It is noteworthy that in order for the flowering of the plant to continue until the autumn period of time, gardeners will not have to put literally any effort. Nevertheless, in order to protect yourself from any problems with growing this plant, you can follow very simple tips. The plant will thrive on fertile, well-drained and light soils. In sunny areas, this plant will bloom very profusely, however, coreopsis can develop well in partial shade. Regarding watering, watering should be provided on a regular basis. However, stagnation of water should not be allowed under any circumstances.
Throughout the entire flowering period of coreopsis, fertilizing should be carried out with the help of mineral fertilizers. As for organic fertilizers, it is recommended to apply them during planting of this plant: in the autumn or spring period. In order to further prolong the flowering of this plant, it is recommended to promptly remove those flowers that have already bloomed. It is noteworthy that some varieties of coreopsis are capable of blooming again. At the end of the flowering period in the autumn season, the entire aerial part of the coreopsis should be cut off at the root. For the winter period of time, the planting of the plant should be covered with dry fallen leaves, and any other options for light shelter are also acceptable.
Reproduction of coreopsis
As for the reproduction of this plant, this can occur both through seeds and by dividing the bush. It is recommended to sow seeds in March or April. If you plant seeds in April, then this should be done in boxes, and if sowing occurs in the month of May, then it should be carried out directly into the open ground. It is noteworthy that late sowing of coreopsis seeds is able to transfer the flowering of coreopsis to the next season. In the event that you are growing a plant in a seedling way, picking the seedlings should be done after two real leaves appear. Already at the end of May, it is recommended to plant seedlings in open ground. When planting, the distance between the plants should be about twenty to forty centimeters: the height will be in direct proportion to the height of the coreopsis bushes.
The division of the bush should be done every three to four years. This is due to the fact that after such a period of time, the decorative effect of the bush is significantly reduced. It is recommended to divide the bush in mid-spring or already at the beginning of autumn. However, it should be remembered that in this case, some types of coreopsis can be transplanted even when the plant is still in bloom. The bush should be dug up and divided into parts, and then the plants are planted in previously prepared soil. Soil preparation is as follows: the soil should be dug up, moistened and top dressing should be applied, which should be mineral fertilizers. At first, such plantings must be watered abundantly, but between watering the soil must have time to dry out.
As for pests, the plant is often affected by caterpillars and aphids. Rust also poses a certain danger to coreopsis.
