Bell Komarov (lat. Campanula komarovii) - a perennial herb of the genus Bell (lat. Campanula), belonging to the family of the same name Bellflower (lat. Campanulaceae). This species of the genus is a very rare plant that has chosen the warm Krasnodar Territory for its place of residence.
What's in your name
Komarov's bell was first described by a Soviet botanist, Vladimir Petrovich Maleev (1894 - 1941), who worked for many years in the famous Nikitsky Botanical Garden, located in the Crimea. He not only worked in a botanical garden, but also studied the flora of the Crimea, Transcaucasia and the Mediterranean. Among the many plants studied and described by Maleev was this type of bell, to which the scientist assigned a name that perpetuated the name of another Soviet botanist.
The plant received the specific epithet "komarovii" in honor of the Soviet botanist, Vladimir Leontievich Komarov (1869 - 1945), who traveled a lot around our country to study the rich flora of Russia.
Description
The guarantee of the longevity of Komarov Bell is a woody taproot, from which numerous ascending stems appear on the surface of the earth, woody at the base and covered with whitish stiff hairs. Plant height varies from 30 to 70 centimeters. The stem of Komarov's Bell is branched and covered with leaves.
In addition to the leaves on the stem, in the first year of life, the plant forms a loose basal rosette of oblong-spatulate leaves, which taper towards the top and at the base, forming a winged petiole. The leaf blade of the basal leaves on both sides has a protective cover of bristly stiff hairs. The edges of the plate are decorated with wavy teeth. The general appearance of basal green leaves with a purple tint along the edges of the leaf plate and dense pubescence is very picturesque and even without flowers deserves the attention of flower growers. Basal leaves hibernate under the snow without additional shelter, without fear of lowering the mercury column to minus 28 degrees.
Stem leaves located in the lower part of the stem take the form of basal leaves, and those that are located higher along the stem turn into sessile lanceolate leaves, decorated with a fine-crenate edge.
In June, pedicels are born from the axils of the upper leaves, bearing one or two large bells (up to 5 centimeters long) with bright purple-blue petals. The base of the spectacular long rim is a picturesque calyx composed of ovoid-triangular sepals, densely covered with stiff white bristles. The hairs are also located along the veins of the petals, outside the bell flower.
Cultivation in culture
The wild-growing Komarov Bell is a very spectacular plant with beautiful patterned leaves and large bell-shaped flowers with a long flowering period. An additional charm to the plant is given by a dense pubescence of tough white hairs. With its attractiveness, the Bellflower can easily compete with any garden plant, and will also be happy to accompany, for example, rose bushes. It can grow as a separate bush, or form small picturesque groups.
The Komarov bell grows in the wild on dry meadows or on the slopes of limestone, and therefore does not tolerate stagnant water when grown in culture, preferring drought.
The plant loves sunny places and tolerates winter cold, withstanding a drop in air temperature to minus 28 degrees without additional shelter.
The Komarov Bell is propagated by sowing seeds immediately to a permanent place, since, having a taproot, the plant does not tolerate transplantation well.
