Katran (lat. Crambe) - an annual or perennial belonging to the Cruciferous or Cabbage family. In nature, the plant grows in the Caucasus and Crimea. It is cultivated as a cultivated plant in the 1960s. Nowadays, it is actively cultivated in European countries and the Russian Federation. Katran is very useful for health, in its composition it contains many biologically active substances.

Description

Katran is represented by herbaceous plants, sometimes semi-shrubs with cylindrical large brown ones, which go 50-80 cm deep. Due to this feature, the katran does not litter vegetable gardens and garden plots. The foliage of plants is large, it is leathery, juicy, lobed or feathery, it can be either naked or pubescent.

Peduncles in the culture under consideration are straight, do not exceed 100 cm in height, are formed in the third year after planting, sometimes earlier. Peduncles bear small, inconspicuous, whitish flowers.. The petals of flowers are solid, narrowed. Fruits in the form of non-cracking light yellow pods, contain brown spherical small seeds, suitable for sowing for two years. Katran blooms profusely for three weeks, and the seeds are ready for harvest in early August.

Growing features

It is preferable to grow katran on loose, moderately moist, permeable, well-processed, highly fertile, neutral soils. It is not recommended to plant a crop on acidic, damp, waterlogged, compacted soils, as this threatens to rot the roots. The best predecessors for katran are Solanaceae. But after Cabbage, you cannot plant it.

Sowing subtleties

You can sow katran both in spring and autumn. In the second case, it is important to provide good shelter for the winter in the form of a thick layer of foliage. Spring sowing involves cold stratification. In the autumn, this procedure is not required. Stratification is carried out as follows: the seeds are immersed in water for several hours, then mixed with wet river sand, and then placed in a cool room, for example, a cellar. You can put the seeds in the refrigerator.

Before sowing, the seeds are cleaned of sand with a sieve and dried. The plot of the culture in question is prepared in a few weeks: the soil is treated with a shovel and rake, and fed with organic and mineral fertilizers. It is necessary to sow cartan in an ordinary way, observing a distance of 40 cm. The seeds are planted to a depth of 1-2 cm.

Care procedures

As soon as the shoots of Katran appear, it is important to provide them with good care. Thinning is performed with thickened crops. It is recommended to carry out thinning when forming 2 leaves on the plants. Re-thinning is possible as needed. Watering is necessary regular, but moderate. If you leave the plants for the winter, then in the spring they will begin their growth very early and actively. The main thing is not to miss this moment, and to carry out top dressing. It is also important to monitor the degree of moisture and looseness of the soil. Weed removal also needs to be taken care of. The fruits of the culture are formed in August. They are collected together with the stems and hung to dry. Before storing seeds, dry them thoroughly.

Harvest

The katran is harvested in September - October. The plant is not afraid of frost, even in autumn the roots continue to develop and grow actively at the end of the growing season. Dug out the katran with a pitchfork, then the roots are cleaned of the earth, the leaves are cut off, washed thoroughly, dried and stored in the refrigerator.
