Savoy cabbage (Latin Brassica oleracea L. convar. Capitata var. Sabauda) - one of the most popular vegetable crops; is a biennial plant belonging to the Cabbage or Cruciferous family. This species has some similarities with white cabbage, it forms large heads of cabbage, the difference lies in the horphenia of the leaves. The homeland of the representative in question is the Mediterranean. The culture is widely cultivated in Europe; it is less common on the territory of the Russian Federation. Perhaps this is due to the fact that it does not have a high yield and is poorly stored.
Description
If you turn to the botanical characteristics, savoy cabbage is an analogue of white cabbage. As already mentioned, the difference lies in the structure of the foliage. The culture forms large round or cone-shaped heads of cabbage, they are loose, often cracked. Savoy cabbage is drought-resistant and cold-resistant, however, it cannot boast of resistance to diseases and pests.
Growing features
Savoy cabbage is a demanding crop. For her, both the location and the composition of the soil are important. True, it does not need a huge amount of nutrients. The culture is photophilous, prefers open areas, growing on hills is not prohibited. Soils are desirable loose, moist, permeable, with a neutral pH reaction. The best predecessors of the plant are Solanaceae, Cereals and Legumes. It is not recommended to plant the species in question after Cruciferous plants.
Soil preparation and sowing
Savoy cabbage seeds are processed before sowing, first they are immersed in hot water for fifteen minutes, then transferred to cool water. Only after that, the seeds are placed in a solution of trace elements for 12 hours, placed under a stream of clean water and sent to the cold for a day.
Most often, the type of cabbage in question is grown through seedlings. Seedling containers are filled with a mixture of garden soil, river sand and peat, taken in equal proportions. Humus should not be used when making a mixture.
Before sowing, the soil is sprayed with a light pink solution of potassium permanganate. Savoy cabbage seeds for seedlings are sown in the first decade of March, late varieties are sown in mid-March. Seeds are sown in an ordinary way, the distance between which is 3 cm. The seeds are planted to a depth of 1 cm.
Seedlings of early varieties of the culture in question are planted in early May, late varieties - in the third decade of May - early June. Young plants are planted according to the scheme at a distance of 40 cm from each other. The plot for Savoy cabbage is prepared in advance: the soil is dug up, organic matter is added and, if necessary, lime (if the soil is acidic). In the spring, the ridges are loosened and fed with phosphorus fertilizers. Wood ash is encouraged.
Care
Savoy cabbage requires regular and moderate watering. Immediately after planting cabbage seedlings in open ground, watering is carried out at least 2 times a day for a week. Later, the Savoy cabbage is moistened every 4 days. After each watering, the soil is carefully loosened, being careful not to damage the roots.
Top dressing also has a positive effect on plant development. The first time, complex mineral fertilizers are applied, supplemented with microelements, the second - using urea (at the beginning of hardening the seedlings), that is, 1-2 weeks before planting. The last feeding with a liquid mullein is carried out 3 weeks after planting the seedlings.
The rest of the care for savoy cabbage is standard. It is important to take care of the health of the plants, because insects and diseases can harm them. Most often, plants are affected by black leg, keel, and peronosporosis. Among the pests, cabbage flies and cruciferous fleas are dangerous. You can fight them with herbal infusions and insecticides.
