Peking cabbage (Latin Brassica rapa subsp.pekinensis) - vegetable culture; herbaceous plant of the Cruciferous family, or Cabbage. Other names are bok choy, lettuce, or petsai. The homeland of the plant is China. Peking cabbage is widely cultivated in Western Europe, Southeast Asia and the United States. On the territory of the Russian Federation, the culture is cultivated in small quantities.

Characteristics of culture

Peking cabbage is a biennial plant cultivated as an annual. The leaves are whole, juicy, yellow, yellow-green or bright green, sometimes slightly pubescent, with a flat or triangular white vein in the middle, with jagged or wavy edges, the inner part is pimply. Leaves form a loose head of cabbage or rosette. In the context of the heads of cabbage are yellow-green.

Peking cabbage is a cold-resistant culture, adult plants can easily withstand frosts down to -5C. The optimum growing temperature is 15-22C. Peking cabbage is a long day plant. With early sowing, the plants increase the vegetative mass, and with a long day they throw out peduncles, bypassing the head phase. The growing season of cabbage is 48-55 days.

Growing conditions

Peking cabbage is a light-demanding plant that develops well in open sunny areas. The culture is resistant to shading, although heads of cabbage or rosettes of leaves in this case are formed small and tasteless. Soils for growing Peking cabbage are preferable fertile, moderately moist with a neutral pH. Waterlogged soils are not encouraged.

Sowing

Peking cabbage seeds are sown in 2-3 terms. For continuous harvest, the crop is sown at intervals of 10-15 days. The first sowing is carried out in early spring under a film cover. It is not recommended to sow cabbage from July 15 to July 20, since the plants prematurely release flowering stems, without forming a large rosette or heads of cabbage. The last sowing is carried out in the first decade of August. The seeding depth of seeds is 0.5-1 cm. Most often, crops are sown in a belt manner, the distance between the rows should be 20-25 cm. With the emergence of seedlings, the crops are thinned out, leaving 10-20 cm between the plants.

It is not forbidden to grow Peking cabbage by seedlings, in this case, sowing is carried out at the end of December in cassettes with cells. Seedlings are planted in the ground 25-30 days after the emergence of seedlings according to the following schemes: leafy varieties - 20 * 20 cm, half-cabbage - 30 * 30 cm, cabbage - 35 * 35 cm. Peking cabbage is grown not only as the main crop, but also in as a sealant. In winter, plants can also be grown on a windowsill.

Care

The main tasks of caring for Peking cabbage are watering, weeding, loosening and pest and disease control. The culture responds positively to feeding with liquid mullein or urea.

Harvesting and storage

Leaf forms are cut so as not to damage the growth points, otherwise the plants will not give a new harvest of leaves. Store them in plastic bags in the refrigerator for 12 days. The final harvesting of Peking cabbage is carried out with the full development of the rosette or heads of cabbage.
