Canna is a perennial plant, which, moreover, can rightfully be called one of the most popular decorative tall plants. The plant is prized for its abundant and long flowering, unusual leaf color and very large brightly colored flowers. In this genus, there are about fifty different varieties of this plant.

As for the most common species of this plant, they should include the following: drooping canna, Indian canna, low canna, hybrid canna and cochineal canna.

Cannes care and cultivation

It is worth noting that the canna offers its amazing beauty, and in return, this plant will require special care from gardeners. Nevertheless, with all this, the cannu can hardly be called a rather whimsical and capricious plant. It is preferable for this plant to be sunny places that will be reliably protected from any gusts of wind. As for the choice of soil, the canna will thrive on fertile and loose soil. It is worth noting that the plant will need abundant watering. In the autumn period, such watering should be very significantly reduced. Timely weeding and loosening of the plant also plays an important role. Such procedures are recommended to be performed immediately after the plant has been watered. Throughout the growing season, it will be necessary to apply dressings about three times: both mineral and organic fertilizers can act as such dressings. In order for the plant to always look extremely attractive, you will need to regularly monitor the removal of both yellowed cannes and faded inflorescences. Closer to autumn, plants should be spud: this method is a fairly effective protection of the plant from possible frost.

You will also need to dig out the rhizomes for the winter: this procedure is most often carried out in the month of October. It is very important to dig out the rhizomes extremely carefully and carefully, while not allowing the destruction of the earthen coma. After such an excavation has been carried out, it will be necessary to cut off the ground part of the canna, leaving about twenty centimeters from the entire base of the plant. Then the rhizomes of the canna are placed in certain containers in which they should be stored for about one to two weeks. This is done so that the rhizomes and the stems of the plant can dry out. After that, the rhizomes of the plants, slightly peeled from the ground, are folded into boxes, which will be endowed with holes on the sides. The boxes should also be filled with sand or sawdust. Such boxes should be stored in a cool and dry room until spring, where the temperature regime will be eight to ten degrees. Most often, boxes with plants are located in basements. However, some experts recommend planting canna rhizomes in pots and treating the plant as a room crop until spring.

Reproduction of cannes

Cannes can be propagated both by dividing rhizomes and by means of seeds. It is worth noting that cannes are rarely propagated with seeds, because this process is not only very laborious, but sometimes cannes also lose the distinctive features of their variety.

As for the division of rhizomes, this should be done in April or in March. Each part of the plant should have about one or two buds. It is recommended to cut the cut with a rather weak solution of potassium permanganate, or it is quite acceptable to sprinkle the cuts with wood ash. Such cuttings should be watered and germinated at a temperature of about twenty to twenty-four degrees. After the appearance of the first leaves, the temperature regime should be reduced. Around May, new plants can already be planted in open ground.
