Calmia is a perennial plant that is characterized by a very decorative flowering. Such flowering is also abundant, and the duration of flowering will be a month.

Description and some types of calmia

In height, this plant can be about one hundred to one hundred and fifty centimeters. It is noteworthy that some varieties of calmia are dwarf, and in height they are about thirty to fifty centimeters. Calmia flowers are very small, they are about a centimeter and one and a half centimeters in diameter. Flowers are collected in inflorescences, there are various colors of kalmia. It should be noted that this plant is characterized by increased resistance to both pests and various diseases.

The flowering of many-leaved kalmia falls in mid-May, in height such a plant reaches about one hundred and fifty centimeters. This type of kalmia is highly resistant to winter temperatures. Broadleaf Calmia in height will be about one hundred centimeters, the flowering of this plant occurs in the period from May to June. In this type of plant, winter hardiness will already be much lower. Narrow-leaved squid in height can be about thirty to one hundred centimeters, the flowering of this type of plant will occur from June to July. This type of plant will become very winter hardy.

Calmia care and cultivation

Kalmia will develop more favorably in a small shade; the location under the trees may become the optimal place for this plant. In addition, the places where the plant grows must be reliably protected from gusts of wind. For soils, fertile, loose, well-drained soils that react acidic will be the best choice. It is worth noting that this plant will not be able to develop on overly heavy soils. On hot days, moderate watering should be provided for the calmia. It is important to remember that in no case should moisture stagnation be allowed. After watering has been carried out or after precipitation has fallen, it is recommended to loosen the soil around the calmia bush. In order to retain moisture, it is recommended to mulch the soil around the plant with sawdust or peat.

Mineral fertilizers should be applied from April to June. Fertilizers should be applied once a month. Fertilizers intended for rhododendrons or for heather plants can act as top dressing. As for organic fertilizers, they should be applied either in the spring or at planting. For the winter period of time, the plant should be covered with dry foliage or spruce branches. As soon as spring comes, the shelter should be removed: such timeliness will prevent rotting of the root collar.

Reproduction of kalmia

It should be noted that the process of reproduction of kalmias is rather problematic, therefore it is recommended to purchase seedlings. As for the propagation of a plant by means of seeds, they should be sown in the month of December. The seeds must be mixed with sand, and then the resulting mixture should be distributed over the surface of the soil, which should be based on peat. Until March, the boxes with seeds should be left in the fresh air, after which the containers should be transferred to the room and covered with foil. It is important to ensure the proper temperature regime for germinating seeds: in the daytime, the thermometer should be kept at around twenty-twenty-five degrees, and at night, the temperature should be about ten degrees. It is noteworthy that plants can be transplanted into open ground only six years after planting the seeds.
