Microbiota (Latin Microbiota) - a coniferous shrub from the numerous Cypress family.

Description

Microbiota is an evergreen shrub with erect or creeping twigs. Under favorable conditions, its height can exceed a meter, and the diameter of a given plant is often several meters - in most cases, the microbiota forms an almost continuous and very dense carpet.

The flattened branches of the microbiota are covered with strong brown bark, and its thin roots always branch very densely. The scale-like needles of the plant reach two millimeters in length and are oval in shape. However, on shaded internal shoots, needles can sometimes be acicular. In winter, the needles under the snow cover almost always turn brown.

Microbiota is a monoecious culture. Megastrobilis (that is, female cones) reach three millimeters in width and six millimeters in length and are endowed with two (occasionally four) opening dryish scales. This is the main difference between microbiota and juniper. Each scale in most cases carries only one wingless oval brownish seed. Pollination usually occurs at the end of spring, and seed ripening starts either at the end of summer or by the beginning of autumn.

Microbiota grows very slowly - in adult specimens, the annual growth of shoots extremely rarely reaches five to seven centimeters. But this plant is rightfully considered a long-liver - even hundred-year-old specimens are found in nature.

Where grows

On the territory of Russia, microbiota can most often be seen both in the Khabarovsk and in the Primorsky regions. As a rule, it grows at an altitude of thirty to six hundred meters above sea level. The microbiota is especially fond of stony and well-drained soils (mainly on char).

In the forests, the microbiota perfectly coexists with ayan spruce, yellow maple, Korean pine, dwarf cedar, Amur mountain ash, white fir and pointed rhododendron.

At present, the microbiota is included (with status 2, that is, as a species decreasing numerically) in the Red Book of Russia.

Usage

Microbiota can boast of extreme decorativeness, so it is used with equal success on rocky hills, and as a ground cover plant, and for bordering lawns or decorating curbs or slopes. Moreover, this plant was introduced into culture relatively recently.

Growing and caring

The microbiota is quite light-requiring, however, it takes root very well in shady areas. It is completely undemanding to the composition of soils, but this plant develops best of all on good riding litters. As for watering, it is recommended to water the microbiota at least twice a week during dry periods. At the same time, it is important to take into account the fact that this green beauty does not tolerate stagnant moisture. This plant also boasts impressive winter hardiness.

It is recommended to systematically loosen young plantings of microbiota - first to a depth of seven to fifteen centimeters, and then to a depth of fifteen centimeters. In the process of loosening, weeds must also be removed.

Reproduction of microbiota can occur both by green cuttings and by seeds. Seed ripening usually occurs in late August or early September. However, it is extremely difficult (even practically impossible) to obtain seeds; in addition, specific conditions are required for their germination. However, grafting with an illiterate approach also does not always give the desired results.
