Meconopsis sometimes also known as blue poppy. This plant can be a perennial or biennial crop. It should be noted that such an unusual plant is endowed with only one drawback: after a single flowering, the meconopsis may simply die. In addition, this plant is rather little known, and also differs in particular by its particular difficulty in growing. If you want such attractive plants to grow in your garden, then you will need to make a lot of effort for this.

Meconopsis species

Meconopsis leaflet is one of the perennial crops, this species can reach a height of about ninety centimeters. Flowering of this plant variety begins around the middle of July. The flowers of meconopsis literal-leaved are quite large, in diameter they can reach about ten centimeters. It should be noted that gardeners most often grow this particular type of meconopsis.

Bristle meconopsis is one of the perennial plants, the height of this culture can reach sixty centimeters. The flowering of this plant will begin in the month of July, and the flowers reach about four centimeters in diameter. The flowers of this plant are painted in delicate lilac tones. The Cambrian meconopsis is a perennial plant: the flowers of this plant can be either yellow or orange. The diameter of these flowers is about five centimeters. The flowering of this culture begins in June and lasts until September. It is noteworthy that this plant is able to reproduce quite well with the help of self-seeding. However, this species of meconopsis has one very significant drawback: the life cycle is rather short. In addition, it should be noted that the Cambrian meconopsis can also be endowed with white inflorescences.

Description of the features of growing meconopsis

It should be noted that this plant prefers shaded areas for cultivation. It is noteworthy that this plant is capable of thriving on literally any soil, however, it is recommended to pick up moist, fertile and fairly well-drained soil. It will be necessary to provide this plant with regular watering in abundant mode, which is due to the fact that meconopsis is a moisture-loving plant. Nevertheless, the slightest waterlogging of the soil can have an extremely negative effect on the development of this plant. However, in particularly hot and dry weather, it is recommended to spray the meconopsis with water. At the very beginning of the growing season, it is necessary to fertilize with mineral fertilizers.

It should be noted that some varieties of this plant will need to provide reliable support. Even in the first year of cultivation, one should not in any way allow this plant to bloom. This circumstance is due to the fact that most often, after such a first flowering, the plant will simply die. In order to extend the life of this plant, you should cut the peduncles before the beginning of the flowering period. If you want to extend the flowering period of meconopsis, then you will need to promptly remove those flowers that have already bloomed. It should be noted that if all these growing conditions are met, the flowering of the plant will begin in the third year of the development of this plant. It is also important to remember that the life span of meconopsis will be on the order of only four years.

In the autumn, it is necessary to prune this plant. It is noteworthy that for the winter period of time the meconopsis will need to provide additional shelter: for example, fallen leaves are ideal.
