Maurandia (lat. Maurandia) - the most delicate tropical liana from the Norichnikov family. The second name is azarina.

Description

Maurandia is a herbaceous climbing plant, endowed with fairly large tubular funnel-shaped flowers that have a bright lilac, purple, pink or white color. As a rule, the height of Maurandia does not exceed three meters. And the leaves of this plant are usually small, dark green in color.

Maurandia is attached to the supports with the help of its peduncles and leaf petioles. In total, this genus has about ten species.

Where grows

Mexico is rightfully considered the birthplace of Maurandia. By the way, this plant was introduced into culture a long time ago - in 1796.

Usage

In culture, you can most often meet climbing Mauranda - it is she who is most often used for decorative purposes and for landscaping gardens. In general, maurandia can be grown with equal success both in the garden and as a container crop. Growing up at a truly unprecedented speed, it rapidly entwines arches with pergolas, and sometimes entire walls!

Growing and caring

Maurandia is a warm and light-loving plant, so it will feel best in sunny areas that are well protected from the wind. However, on a hot afternoon, Maurandia needs proper shading. And the soil for its cultivation should ideally be loamy or neutral, but at the same time sufficiently fertile and, of course, well-drained.

Also, for the full development of Maurandia, it will be necessary to establish reliable supports. This beauty is watered quite abundantly, and in dry seasons the number and volume of irrigation must be increased.

As for fertilization, Maurania is usually only fertilized during the growing season - this is done every one to two weeks. Complex mineral fertilizers enriched with various mineral elements are especially well suited for these purposes. It is quite acceptable to alternate them with organic matter - potassium humate, fermented grass, lignohumate or vermicompost. And ideally, it is recommended to mulch the soil around this beauty thoroughly with peat. And in order to preserve soil moisture, maurandia is also mulched with compost - this approach provides it at the same time with additional nutrition, which in turn allows it to fully develop even without additional feeding. If maurandia is grown as a room culture, then as it grows, it should be transplanted.

Reproduction of Maurandia is carried out by seeds - they are usually sown in February or in March, and closer to mid-May they are transplanted into open ground. In the process of sowing, the seeds must be gently pressed into the soil a little, adding a small layer of sand on top. Typically, germination of maurandia seeds occurs at temperatures between eighteen and twenty degrees. By the way, in order to facilitate the process of planting a plant, it is best to immediately sow the seeds in three to four pieces in peat-humus pots. And do not forget that growing seedlings also sometimes need support.

It is quite permissible to propagate maurandia by cuttings - they can always be obtained when planting seedlings by cutting off weakened shoots. Such cuttings root without much difficulty in greenhouse conditions in a peat-sand mixture or in sand.

And for the winter, Maurandia is usually transferred either to greenhouses or to rooms in which the temperature does not drop below ten degrees. As for pests or diseases, Maurandia is almost never affected by them - its juicy green foliage always looks healthy.
