History

West Africa is considered the birthplace of the magic fruit. For the first time this plant was discovered in 1725 during the expedition of the Spaniards.

Description

The height of the magic fruit ranges from three to six meters. The dark green oblong leaves of this plant always grow in a spiral. And tiny little white flowers (their diameter does not exceed five to seven millimeters) bloom almost all year round, giving the shrubs rest only for one or two winter months.

The fruits of the magic fruit are tiny red drupes, inside of which there is one white seed the size of a coffee bean. Outwardly, the fruits of this culture resemble barberry, and they appear already in the third or fourth week after they are set.

A distinctive feature of these fruits is their ability to affect the taste buds, "turning off" the receptors responsible for the perception of sour taste for an hour or two. Studies have shown that this is due to the content in fruits of a protein called miraculin (by the way, this word literally translates from English as "miraculous"). It is noteworthy that sugar after eating magic fruits seems bitter, lemon turns out to be sweeter than orange, and juicy and sweet orange seems more bitter than radish. Such interesting transformations are precisely what led to the name of these unusual fruits. However, these "magical" properties are fully manifested only after the removal of the fruits - fruits lying for several days begin to gradually lose their "magical" properties. By the way, to preserve them, the fruits can be frozen.

The magic fruit grows well in well-drained acidic soils. He especially loves loose substrate. This heat-loving plant prefers highly humidified air and needs constant spraying. But the formation of the crown and its pruning is not required for him.

The magic fruit grows very slowly - this feature makes it incredibly attractive for creating bonsai.

This culture is propagated mainly by seeds, and in order to accelerate their germination, it is recommended to slightly file each nut-seed. And the magic fruit begins to bear fruit approximately in the third or fourth year after planting.
