Buddleja (Latin Buddleja) - a genus of herbaceous plants, deciduous or semi-evergreen shrubs of the Norichnikov family. The early genus was ranked as a member of the Buddlev family. The genus has about 100 species. Buddleya has a long and interesting history. The plant is especially decorative; during flowering it emits a pleasant honey aroma that attracts butterflies. For this reason, the culture is often referred to as a "butterfly magnet". Natural range - tropical, subtropical and temperate latitudes of Asia, America and South Africa.

Characteristics of culture

Buddleya is a spreading deciduous or semi-evergreen shrub up to 5 m high with brownish-green, slightly ribbed and drooping branches at the ends. The bark is light brown or dark brown, fissured. The leaves are large, dark green, tomentose-pubescent below, oval-lanceolate. The flowers are small, white, yellow, blue, lilac with a bright orange eye in the center, collected in spike-shaped inflorescences, which outwardly resemble lilac inflorescences.

In some species, in particular in Buddleya David, the inflorescences reach a length of 40 cm. Buddleya blooms from July to October, the flowering time depends on the species and variety. Seeds are small, numerous, ripen in September-October. Buddleas are distinguished by rapid growth, even frozen shoots are soon restored and bloom in the same year.

Growing conditions

Buddlei are photophilous, grow better and bloom profusely in sunny areas, protected from drafts and cold winds. Soils are preferable well moistened, drained, nutritious, rich in humus, loose, neutral or slightly acidic. The culture of saline, waterlogged, marshy and strongly acidic soils does not accept.

The optimum temperature for normal development is 20-25C. Budleys are unstable to frost, the most cold-resistant species can withstand frosts down to -20C. The culture does not tolerate thickening, otherwise the plants will form flat and one-sided. Subject to the growing conditions and proper care, the plants will delight their owners with lush flowering and a delicate sweetish aroma.

Reproduction and planting

Propagated by buddley seeds, green and lignified shoots. Sowing is carried out in early spring or before winter. Seeds do not need preliminary stratification. Seeds are sown in seedling boxes filled with moist soil without deep planting, lightly sprinkling with turf or humus.

Crops are covered with foil or glass, periodically ventilated and moistened. Seeds germinate after about 3 weeks. With the appearance of 2-3 true leaves on the seedlings, they are dived in separate pots and planted in open ground at the beginning of June. With good care, young plants grown by sowing seeds bloom in the second year.

Crop cuttings are carried out immediately after flowering. Cuttings are cut from young shoots about 20 cm long. Each cutting should have at least 3 buds. Cuttings take root within 1, 5-2 months. It is not forbidden to store cut cuttings for a short time in a cool, frost-free room. Budleys grown by cuttings increase in size up to 60-70 cm during the season.

Care

Proper care and care of the buddley will ensure the health of the plant, favorable wintering, decorativeness and lush flowering. Formative and sanitary pruning is considered to be one of the main tasks in the care of a buddley. With insufficient pruning, buddley bushes stretch out, become bare and practically do not bloom. The culture is responsive to watering and fertilizing with mineral fertilizers.

The use of the latter significantly increases the size and number of inflorescences, and the intensity of their color. In autumn, the near-stem zone is mulched with peat or humus, thus freezing of the dormant buds located at the base of the shoots can be avoided. You can wrap the bushes with lutrasil or any other covering material, but before the onset of stable heat, it must be removed, otherwise the plants will begin to rot.
