Bocarnea lately it has become an increasingly popular plant. This circumstance is due to the fact that the bokarnea is considered quite unpretentious in care, and also has a very peculiar appearance. Bocarnea belongs to a genus called Nolina and belongs to the agave family. The genus Nolin includes about thirty varieties of succulent plants. This genus was first described at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
Particularly common is bokarnea bent, and among the people this plant can be recognized by the name of the elephant's leg. Bocarnea has a very unusual appearance: the plant has a thick trunk, which expands downward and becomes like a bottle. At the top of this trunk, there are rather dense bunches of leathery leaves, painted in dark green tones. The leaves themselves are rather narrow, ribbon-like, and their length can reach one meter. However, under natural conditions, the height of such a plant can even reach eight meters, however, at home, the plant will not grow higher than one and a half meters.
This plant is native to Texas, as well as the northern part of Mexico. The plant perfectly exists in hot and especially arid conditions; during the rains, moisture accumulates, which the bokarnea uses the rest of the time.
Under natural conditions, in summer, adult plants have a paniculate inflorescence with many creamy flowers. It does not bloom at home, only old plants bloom in greenhouses. Bocarnea is considered an unpretentious plant, since moisture accumulates in the expanded base of the trunk (it is called caudex), which allows them to easily withstand for a long time without watering. But excess moisture in the soil can be detrimental to nolina. Excess water is not absorbed and does not evaporate, the plant can easily rot.
Care and cultivation of bokarnea
As for lighting, the plant will need bright places, because its homeland is intense sunlight. It is recommended to place the bokarney on the southern sides. In the event that the plant does not receive enough light, then the trunk begins to bend and at the same time stretches towards the light source. In summer, the plant should be taken out onto the balcony, but rainwater should be avoided.
As for the temperature regime, for the summer period of time, the optimal temperature is considered to be from twenty to twenty-five degrees. In winter, the plant will need cool temperatures, in a radius of ten to fifteen degrees Celsius.
This plant is able to perfectly tolerate rather arid air in apartments. Bocarnea should be watered about twice a month, while the water should be lukewarm, and the watering should be moderate. It is permissible to water the plant through the pallet. In winter, however, the plant should not be watered at all, but watering once a month is acceptable. The plant cannot die from drought, but it can very easily rot from an excess of moisture.
In the event that you keep the plant in medium light conditions and carry out regular watering, then the trunk will stretch upwards, and its slight thickening will occur from below. In this case, the cap of the leaves will be quite large and disheveled.
If you want your plant to be short and the trunk to be very thickened, then very bright lighting and abundant rare watering will be required. In order for the accumulation of moisture to occur, this plant will increase the volume of thickening on the trunk.
As for feeding bokarnea, it will be necessary to apply complex mineral fertilizers, starting from about mid-autumn. The following soil composition will be required: two parts of sod land, one part of leafy land, peat, humus and sand. the following soil is also admissible: one part of peat and leafy soil, as well as two parts of sand.
