Bassia (Latin Bassia) - decorative culture; a large genus of the Amaranth family. Includes over 25 species common in their natural environment in Russia, North America, Mediterranean countries, Asian countries and even Australia. It includes several species of the previously abolished genus Kokhia. It is represented mainly by perennial dwarf shrubs and annual herbaceous plants, suitable for landscaping personal backyards and large city parks.

Characteristics of culture

Bassia is represented by shrubs and herbaceous plants, endowed with ascending or erect shoots, which are crowned with opposite, whole foliage. It should be noted that the foliage of the culture does not have an even and uniform shape, the leaf blade is very changeable, which is one of the features of the representatives of the genus. The flowers of the bass are small, inconspicuous, always collected in lush spikelets.

Common types

Among the most common types, it should be noted

Egyptian bass (Latin Bassia aegyptiaca) … It is already clear from the name that the homeland of the species is hot Egypt. However, it is successfully grown in Russia as well. Interestingly, the species became known only in 2006. Outwardly, the species is represented by perennial dwarf shrubs up to 70 cm high. It is endowed with creeping and at the same time erect stems with sessile small foliage. The flowers are small, collected in a spikelet, have bracts. Fruits are small achenes. Fruits ripen in early spring, in their natural environment - in May.

Bassia broom (Latin Bassia scoparia) - this species is just one of those that were previously attributed to the genus Kokhia. In Russia, bassii seeds are still sold under the old name. The plant is represented by herbaceous annuals, which in the process of growth form lush bushes of a pyramidal or oval shape. The foliage of the species is light, green, small, elongated, linear. She literally showered the stems. By autumn, the foliage takes on a beautiful reddish tint. The flowers, like those of the previously described species, are small, inconspicuous, collected in ears or panicles. Fruits in the form of nuts, bear small seeds that can be stored for no more than 2 years, later they are unsuitable for sowing.

The subtleties of growing

All members of the genus are absolutely unpretentious. But in order to achieve lush green bushes that will decorate the garden, you should plant the plant in sunny or with diffused light areas. The bass does not like the thick shadow, just like lowlands with stagnant cold air. Soils are desirable fertile, loose, drained, moderately moist. A mild drought won't hurt. During the growth process, it is extremely important to periodically loosen and moisturize the soil, these actions will help to achieve the splendor of the bushes.

You can sow bass directly into open ground under a film. Since the seeds are small, they do not need to be covered with a layer of soil, it is enough to scatter them over the soil surface, press in slightly and spray from a spray bottle. As it grows, it is necessary to thin out the seedlings, and after the warm weather has finally established on the street, you can remove the film and plant the plants on the planned site. The distance between plants should be at least half a meter. Planting bass too often is not recommended.
