Delphinium (Latin Delphinium) - flower culture; annual or perennial belonging to the Buttercup family. Other names are larkspur, spur. Under natural conditions, delphiniums grow in European and Asian countries. On the territory of Russia, there are about a hundred species. The homeland of several types of culture is Southeast Asia.
Description
Delphiniums are represented by herbaceous plants, reaching a height of 0, 2-3 m, bearing divided, palm-like, dissected, jagged foliage, pointed at the tips. The leaves are slightly pubescent, alternating. Flowers in delphiniums are irregular, blue, blue, purple, white, pink, collected in panicles or brushes. The fruits are presented in the form of leaflets. Delphiniums bloom during the summer, usually flowering begins in mid-June.
The subtleties of growing
Delphinium is a light-loving plant, it prefers illuminated areas with an openwork shadow. It grows and develops well on moist, nutritious, drained, loose, neutral soils. Optimal - loam and sandy loam soils. The culture is drought-resistant, but it will not tolerate a long drought, it will begin to fade. Delphinium does not accept damp, acidic, swampy and dense soils. Most of the varieties of delphiniums are winter hardiness.
Breeding features
The culture is propagated by seed, cuttings and dividing the bush. Seeds are sown in winter or early spring. In the first case, shelter is required for the winter, because the seeds can freeze out. Some gardeners grow delphiniums in seedlings. And this is a fairly correct approach, plants obtained through seedlings bloom much earlier than those that were sown in the ground.
Sowing seeds for seedlings is carried out at the end of March, after which they are abundantly moistened and covered with a film. Monthly seedlings are subjected to thinning, leaving a distance of 5-8 cm between them. Seedlings are transplanted into the ground not earlier than the first decade of May. The preparation of the site for the cultivation of crops is carried out a couple of weeks before the intended planting. The soil is dug up and fed with mineral fertilizers.
Delphiniums are cut in early spring. Cuttings are cut from young stems, or rather their tops. Cuttings are planted in a greenhouse, for the first time they provide protection from direct sunlight. Rooting occurs in the third to fifth week. They are planted in a permanent place the next year.
Care procedures
Crop care is simple, it consists of regular watering, fertilizing, weeding and loosening. The first feeding is carried out at the beginning of growth with complex mineral fertilizers, the second - in the budding phase, the third - after flowering.
Tall varieties of delphiniums must be tied to a support, otherwise they will lie under the weight of the flowers. Tie up preferably with cotton ribbons. Harnesses are not suitable for these purposes. With the onset of cold weather, the aboveground part of the plants is cut off and insulated with peat.
Usage
Delphinium is a highly ornamental plant, often used to decorate household plots. Delphiniums are appropriate in almost all flower beds, including borders, mixborders. They are also suitable for creating groups on the lawn. Low-growing forms of culture fit perfectly into rocky gardens - alpine hills.
