Granadilla sweet (Latin Passiflora ligularis) Is a fruit crop belonging to the Passionaceae family.

Description

Granadilla sweet is a graceful tree-like fast-growing liana, endowed with smooth cylindrical shoots, the diameter of which can reach up to five millimeters. By the way, during each season, all shoots lengthen by about three to four meters.

Oval, whole-edged and slightly heart-shaped leaves of sweet granadilla grow from seven to fifteen centimeters in length. Moreover, all leaf petioles are equipped with special glands: one is in the middle, and the second is near the top.

The flowers of this plant are as large as the flowers of all other passionflower: their diameter ranges from five to ten centimeters. All flowers are very unusual and surprisingly beautiful, pinkish or white - this culture can be grown just for the sake of flowers alone.

The egg-shaped fruits of the sweet granadilla reach six to seven centimeters in diameter and boast a fairly firm and slippery skin. Moreover, they can have both yellow and red or orange color.

Inside each fruit, you can find miniature black seeds, framed by a rather interesting transparent pulp, very reminiscent of gelatin.

Where grows

The distribution area of sweet granadilla is quite large. Most often it can be seen in a number of Central American countries (from Bolivia to colorful Central Mexico), in addition, it is actively grown in Jamaica, New Guinea, Guam, as well as in Haiti and Hawaii.

Application

This unusual fruit is an essential food source for a number of local peoples. Most often, these fruits are eaten fresh or used to obtain juice, which is an excellent ingredient for making alcohol-free soft drinks.

The pulp of the fruit is enriched with vitamins and valuable microelements, which makes them an excellent general tonic and an excellent helper for the treatment of anemia (this fruit contains a lot of iron). This culture will also serve well with too heavy menstruation, as well as during the recovery period after complex surgical interventions. And its regular use to a large extent contributes to the renewal and growth of both hair and bone tissue.

The high potassium content in these fruits allows them to be recommended for various cardiovascular ailments, especially if they are associated with increased blood pressure, severe tachycardia or edema. And there is even more vitamin C in these bright fruits than in oranges, which means that sweet granadilla is an irreplaceable assistant both in the prevention of all kinds of viral diseases and in getting rid of them.

This plant is also used in landscape gardening - this wonderful liana is perfect for landscaping squares, as well as any gardens and parks.

Contraindications

Sometimes, allergic reactions can occur to fruits.

Growing and caring

Sweet granadilla is incredibly photophilous, so it will grow best only in well-lit open areas. However, in the shade, its growth will also continue, but this beauty will not please with flowering in this case.

Despite the fact that sweet granadilla is not considered a drought-resistant crop, it does not tolerate waterlogging. But to the soil, it is absolutely undemanding. As for reproduction, it occurs both vegetatively (by cuttings) and by seeds.
