Latin name: Hydrocleis

Family: Limnocharisaceae

Categories: Plants for ponds

Hydrocleis, or water poppy (Latin Hydrocleis) - plant for water bodies and coastal areas; perennial rhizome plant of the Limnocharis family. Homeland is South America.

Characteristics of culture

Hydrokleis is a rosette plant with floating leaves that takes root in the ground using stem nodes. Stems are highly branched, long, cylindrical, very fragile, filled with milky sap. Broken stems do not die, but continue to develop. Floating leaves are smooth, cordate or broadly oval, located on long petioles, yellowish-purple or dark green, slightly pubescent underneath. The underwater leaves are linear, sessile, and are actually petioles.

The flowers are single, rather large, yellow in color, reach 5-7 cm in diameter, grow from the axils of the leaves, are raised above the water surface by several centimeters. Hydrocleis bloom begins in July. Surprisingly, each flower of an aquatic plant lives only one day. The fruit is a multileaf, contains about 40-50 smooth seeds with a horseshoe-shaped embryo. Hydrocleis was introduced into culture as early as 1850. Currently, only five plant species are known, however, only water lily glue is used in landscape design.

Growing and caring

Hydrocleis is a beautiful aquatic plant that is grown in special containers filled with fertile soil, placed at the bottom of the reservoir. The culture is not demanding, although it prefers well-lit and heated areas of water bodies. The immersion depth should be no more than 60 cm. Hydrokleis is propagated by sowing seeds and dividing by offspring. For the winter, the plants are transferred to rooms with an air temperature of 8-12C, and stored in small closed containers. Hydrokleis is a culture resistant to pests and diseases, therefore it does not need processing.

Application

Quite often, hydrokleis is used in landscape design for decorating water bodies. Subject to all conditions of cultivation and care, the plant grows rapidly, forming a beautiful carpet.
