Heterantera holly (lat. Heteranthera zosterifolia) - an aquatic plant from the Pontederia family.
Description
Geterantera holly is an aquatic plant, endowed with rather long stems (sometimes their length reaches half a meter) and very interesting leaves of light green color. The lanceolate leaves of this plant are attached to the stems alternately.
Often, a geterantera holly is confused with another aquatic inhabitant - eichornia varifolia. The beauty of the geterantera differs from the latter in that its leaves in most cases are straight, although occasionally they can be slightly wavy. And the bizarre arcuate leaves of Eichornia varifolia, gathering in small whorls, are somewhat reminiscent of palm leaves.
Where grows
Most often, the Heterantera Holly can be found in South American waters.
Usage
The Geterantera Holly is excellent for keeping in aquariums - it is highly appreciated by both amateurs and professionals. Sometimes this plant can be successfully grown in greenhouses, but the decorative value of specimens grown in the air will in any case be lower.
Growing and caring
Despite the fact that this aquatic beauty is quite tall, it will feel most comfortable in aquariums with relatively low water levels. If you try to grow it at a solid depth, then its leaves, located in the lower parts of the stems, will slowly begin to fall off. Tropical aquariums are best suited for growing heteranteras of holly - temperatures in the range from twenty-two to twenty-six degrees affect its development in the most favorable way. However, the temperature of about twenty degrees will not destroy this aquatic beauty, that is, it is quite permissible to grow the holly for a geterante in moderately warm aquariums.
The water in aquariums should ideally be soft and slightly acidic. Too hard water adversely affects the development of leaves - they quickly begin to fall off. But in old water, this plant feels very good. If you add a little peat to the water, then it can not be changed for a long time.
The quality of the soil does not particularly affect the full development of geterantera holly - you can take absolutely any soil, the main thing is that the plant has the opportunity to take root in it. And this aquatic inhabitant receives all the necessary nutrients directly from the water, therefore, she also does not require systematic feeding. By the way, it is very simple to determine whether a geterante needs holly feeding - it reacts to a deficiency of iron and other trace elements by forming black ripples on the leaves.
As for the lighting, it must be sufficiently intense - at least 0.5 W / l. An excellent solution would be high-quality artificial lighting in tandem with side lighting. If a geterantera holly suffers a lack of lighting, then its leaves will begin to shrink and gradually fall off, and the plant itself will stretch very much. With a temporary lack of light, the leaves will grow back over time, and with a constant lack of lighting, you should definitely not expect anything good.
Geterantera holly is good in that it will develop equally well throughout all seasons. And she is completely undemanding to the conditions of detention provided to her. In aquariums, it is usually placed in the middle ground or in the background.
The most effective breeding option for this aquatic plant will be cuttings - the cuttings are left to float freely on the water surface until roots begin to form on them, and only then they can be transplanted into the ground.
