Volzhanka (lat. Aruncus) - shade-tolerant moisture-loving perennial from the Pink family.

Description

Volzhanka is a perennial, the height of which ranges from one to one and a half meters. Its leafy erect stems form spectacular spreading bushes, reaching one hundred and twenty centimeters in diameter. The delicate complex leaves of the Volzhanka can be either twice or three times feathery, and they all sit on very strong and rather long petioles.

The spreading paniculate inflorescences of the Volzhanka reach half a meter in length, while the inflorescences formed by staminate (male) flowers will always be much thicker than the inflorescences consisting of only female flowers - the latter are usually delicate and more sparse.

The diameter of small Volzhanka flowers usually does not exceed 0.3 cm, and their color is almost always white, although slightly greenish or yellowish flowers can be seen a little less often. Flowering of this plant usually starts in June-July and lasts from thirty to thirty-five days. And the fruits of Volzhanka look like very bizarre leaflets. As for the ripening of small seeds, it usually occurs in mid-September.

In total, the genus Volzhanka includes about twelve independent species.

Where grows

Volzhanka is quite widespread in the European part of Russia (mainly in the western regions), as well as in Central Europe and the Caucasus. It grows mainly in mixed or deciduous forests.

Usage

In culture, Volzhanka has been known for a very long time - since 1623! And this wonderful plant has proven itself well in ornamental gardening! Volzhanka looks especially great in flower beds located on shady areas. This beauty will look wonderful both in group and in single plantings, in addition, it can be safely planted in the background in mixed flower beds - it goes well with many other perennials. Astilbe will look very beautiful against the background of the lush openwork greenery of the beautiful Volzhanka, the flowering of which begins a little later. In addition, Volzhanka is perfect for decorating the banks of various reservoirs, as well as for planting in rockeries.

As for cutting, in the form of bouquets, Volzhanka will not last long - already on the second or third day, the cut inflorescences will begin to fade slowly.

Growing and caring

In order for Volzhanka to boast of a very impressive decorativeness, it is recommended to plant it in semi-shady areas characterized by well-provided moisture and sufficiently fertile soils.

In dry periods, Volzhanka needs regular and fairly abundant watering, in addition, about once a year, good organic fertilizers must be applied for planting Volzhanka.

In general, Volzhanka is very undemanding to care - it grows superbly and quickly, and also boasts the ability to perfectly resist all kinds of weeds. When her panicles fade and turn brown, it is recommended to cut them off, but this is not at all necessary - some gardeners even consider the fruiting shoots very beautiful and decorative. Moreover, by allowing the seeds to develop, it is possible to ensure the reproduction of the Volzhanka by self-seeding, and this, without a doubt, is the most convenient way to get new plants! However, quite often Volzhanka is propagated by seeds or by dividing bushes (it is usually produced towards the end of summer or in spring). It is important to take into account that for the first time seedlings will please with their flowering only in the third or even fourth year.
