Acena (Latin Acaena) - a genus of semi-shrubs and shrubs of the Pink family. Acene occurs naturally in South America, New Zealand and Australia. The genus has about 60 species.

Acene is a creeping dwarf shrub or shrub up to 30 cm high with numerous highly branched shoots, which intertwine with each other as they grow, forming a rather dense cover. The leaves are rounded, leathery, with sharp-toothed edges, can be painted in a variety of shades - from light green to silver and even bronze.

The flowers are small, up to 10 cm in diameter, collected in spherical inflorescences with prominent soft and thin "needles". The culture blooms from late June-early July to late autumn. Acene appeared in Russia relatively recently, but has already gained popularity among gardeners. Growing, the plants form elegant clumps, and their creeping stems, when touched with the soil surface, easily root.

Growing conditions

Acene develops well in illuminated areas. In the shade, the plants form loose carpets that do not bloom abundantly. Soils for growing crops are desirable drained, fertile, light, moderately moist. The acene does not tolerate compacted, waterlogged, waterlogged and highly acidic soils. It is not recommended to grow acene in low-lying areas with an accumulation of melt water and cold air. On such sites, plants do not tolerate winters well, and in spring they rot.

Reproduction

Acena is propagated by seeds and stem cuttings. Seeds are sown in early spring with preliminary weekly stratification. Seeds that are not subjected to stratification do not germinate well and do not give amicable shoots. Sowing culture is carried out in seedling containers.

Seedlings appear rather quickly. In the phase of 1-2 true leaves, the seedlings dive in separate pots. Acena seedlings are planted in open ground at the end of May; by the end of August, the plants are transformed into low and lush bushes that can easily survive even a cold winter.

Crop cuttings are carried out in spring or early summer. Each cutting should have a segment of last year's shoot with air roots in the node. Cuttings are planted in the ground. Until a strong root system appears, the cuttings are regularly sprayed, and the soil is watered abundantly (without waterlogging).

Care

In general, Acene is an undemanding plant and does not need special care. However, one should not forget about systematic weeding, loosening and watering. Top dressing is also not forbidden, because the application of fertilizers activates the growth of the stems. For the winter, the plants are covered with spruce branches, in the southern regions this procedure is not required. Acene is resistant to diseases and pests, especially if all growing conditions and proper care are observed. Since the plant grows very quickly, it is important to prune in a timely manner, thereby restraining the growth of shoots.

Application

Acena is distinguished by its increased decorative properties, which is why it is more and more often found in personal personal plots, as well as in gardens and parks. Acena is a kind of substitute for a lawn, it is ideal for decorating rocky areas. Plants look harmonious in combination with hyacinths, daffodils, tulips and other bulbs. Also, the culture fits perfectly into compositions with conifers and representatives of the Heather family. Acene can act as an ampelous plant, it can be grown in hanging pots and flowerpots.
