Aspidistra high It is also known under the following names: mother-in-law's tongue, cast-iron plant and even butchers' palm. The very name of aspidistra comes from two Greek words, which in translation means the words shield and star. This genus includes about eight species that have found their distribution in Asia.

It is worth noting that this plant cannot be called whimsical to care for. In summer, the plant should be taken out into the open ground, but this place should be shaded. Also at this time, abundant watering and regular spraying are required. However, aspidistra can well tolerate both temporary lack and excess of moisture. Apart from this, the plants will need good drainage.

Aspidistra is a perennial herb that can have both creeping aboveground and underground articulated rhizomes. The leaves of the aspidistra are glossy, tough and elastic. The plates of such leaves will be broadly oval or broadly lanceolate: their length will be about fifty centimeters, and their height is about fifteen centimeters. At the base of the leaf there is one or two scale-like leaves that enclose the entire petiole. The flowers on the rhizome are located right at the very surface of the soil. The perianth will have eight lobes, and their color is either yellow-brown or crimson-brown. The fruit of the plant is berry-like. The homeland of the aspidistra is Japan and China. Under natural conditions, the plant grows in shady forests.

There is also a garden form of this plant, which will have leaves covered with both white and cream stripes.

Aspidistra care

Actually, as mentioned above, this plant can develop favorably in almost any conditions. The main thing will be only to provide protection from direct sunlight. The pot with the plant can even be placed on the northern windows, or you can place it in the middle of the room, away from any windows. In winter, you should choose a cooler place for this plant, but you should not allow a temperature regime of less than five degrees and no higher than fifteen degrees Celsius.

So, the lighting should be intense, while the plant should be in partial shade. With regard to air humidity, moderate humidity will be the optimal mode. Plants will need feeding in the summer. In summer, flower fertilizers should be applied every week, but the amount should be kept at a moderate level.

Reproduction of such a plant as high aspidistra occurs by dividing the rhizomes even during planting. To root a plant, a soil temperature regime will be required, which will not be lower than eighteen degrees Celsius.

The plant does not tolerate transplanting very well, so this procedure should be performed only if absolutely necessary. The substrate, which will contribute to the correct development of the plant, should consist in equal proportions of a leaf mixture, humus earth, sand and peat. In addition, you will need to take twice the amount of turf mixture.

When growing this plant, you can face the following hazards: aphids and spider mites. But from excessive watering and exposure to intense sunlight, leaf burns can occur and even rotting of the root system can occur. As for the fight against aphids and spider mites, it will be necessary to spray with appropriate preparations.

It should be noted that calamus also has a considerable number of useful properties. Medicinal substances and elements are found in almost all parts of the plant. Aspidistra high has found quite widespread use in the presence of stones in the urinary system, in various gastrointestinal diseases, as well as in muscle pain, diarrhea and convulsions.
