Asplenium (lat. Asplenium) - a winter-hardy moisture-loving perennial fern from the Kostencovye family. The second name is Kostenets.

Description

Asplenium is a short herbaceous plant that can be either epiphytic or rock or terrestrial. The height of this plant usually ranges from twenty centimeters to a meter, and its whole evergreen frond sit on short stalks. Asplenium's leaves are either forked or pinnate, and its creeping rhizomes are short and vertical.

Sori in asplenium are always linear, running along the lower surface of the leaves along the lateral veins, and all of them are closed with linear membranous induction. And in some species of this fern, special brood buds are formed on the leaves - these buds are necessary for the plant for its subsequent vegetative propagation.

Asplenium spores begin to ripen in July, and their ripening period usually lasts until October. By the way, brownish streaky sporangia can be easily seen with the naked eye on the undersides of the leaves.

In total, science knows about seven hundred species of asplenium.

Where grows

Under natural conditions, asplenium grows in almost all geographic zones of our planet, without exception. It is especially common in Japan, North America, North Africa, Asia Minor, as well as in the Caucasus, Europe and a number of Atlantic islands. As for Russia and neighboring countries, in these territories you can meet about twenty species of Asplenium, and it will be mainly rocky species. And in Germany, wild asplenium species are completely protected!

Usage

In ornamental gardening, asplenium is very successfully used to design retaining walls, in addition, many gardeners are very willing to plant it in rocky gardens and in alpine hills. The extremely decorative leaves of this plant always look very, very impressive! And asplenium is also ideal for planting in rocky or pebbly coastal areas!

At home, Asplenium is often grown in pots and, it should be noted, it grows very well in them! But in order for the growth and development of a given plant to be full, its owner needs to create conditions for it as close as possible to natural conditions!

Growing and caring

Asplenium feels best in semi-shady or shady places. Especially welcomes this handsome soil with lime content. Nevertheless, in general, this plant is very unpretentious both to the soil and to the place of its cultivation. As for domestic ferns, it is recommended to prepare a special soil mixture for their cultivation, consisting of humus, leafy soil, coconut soil and pine bark. And at the bottom of the pot, it is important to try to create an optimal drainage layer - this approach will avoid stagnant moisture and, accordingly, possible decay of rhizomes.

Since this fern is very dry-loving, it does not tolerate mounding very well in winter. To avoid such a nuisance, ideally, it should be placed in a rocky gorge, equipped with sandy soil containing humus. And, of course, good drainage will be the key to success in growing asplenium in all cases! Also, this plant periodically needs to be pampered with diluted dressings - fertilizers specially designed for indoor plants are especially well suited for these purposes.

Reproduction of asplenium is carried out either by spores or by dividing its large bundles in the spring. And, importantly, this handsome man does not need frequent transplants!
