Arizarum (lat. Arisarum) - a herbaceous plant that is a member of the Aroid family.

Description

Arizarum is a not too tall ground cover plant, endowed with something resembling onion feathers with juicy arrow-shaped leaves. With the onset of spring, these leaves form a luxurious continuous carpet of the most delicate green color, while the height of this carpet can reach ten centimeters. And the stalks of arizarum end in tubers, which can be both cylindrical and ovoid.

As for the inflorescences of arizarum, they have a rather strange shape - each inflorescence folds into a miniature ear, which has some resemblance to calla lilies. From above, such buds are covered with tubular covers similar to slightly curved goblets, and they end with long outgrowths resembling mouse tails. But during the flowering period, it is impossible to take your eyes off the arizarum!

Arizarum flowers are unisexual, without perianths. They have a very unpleasant odor, however, it is this smell that attracts insects (mainly flies) pollinating them to them. By the way, insects that fall into the bowels of flowers cannot subsequently get out of them back to freedom - they are disoriented by the dark and light areas of the flower bedspreads. That is why these flowers are sometimes called optical traps. And the fruits of arizarum are hemispherical berries slightly flattened at the tops with a fleshy-leathery pericarp. The angular edges of these berries are slightly raised, the pistil is invariably preserved directly with the fruits, and there are very, very few seeds inside the fruits. As for the seeds, they are characterized by a pronounced ovoid shape.

Where grows

The main place of growth of arizarum is the Mediterranean regions of Europe, however, this plant can be found in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Morocco, and in a number of other countries far from Europe.

Arizarum usually grows among shrubs or under trees, as well as in forests, between rocks or on rocks.

Usage

Despite the fact that all varieties and all parts of arizarum without exception are poisonous, this plant has found its use in homeopathy. And sometimes it is grown in gardens, where it acts as an exotic ornamental plant.

Growing and caring

Arizarum will feel best in partial shade, and the soil intended for its cultivation should ideally be fertile and well-drained. If the plant is planned to be grown indoors, it is necessary to prepare in advance low, but at the same time quite spacious containers - since the rhizomes of arizarum are located near the soil surface, there is absolutely no need to purchase deep containers for planting it. As for the best temperature for the development of arizarum, it is in the range from twenty-five to twenty-eight degrees.

In spring and throughout the summer season, arizarum needs abundant watering, and with the onset of autumn and winter, watering is reduced to moderate. Also, during the entire growing season, it is important to ensure that the air humidity is high enough. And do not forget about daily spraying, otherwise arizarum may feel unwell.

It is recommended to give additional fertilizing to arizarum growing in apartment conditions once every two weeks - you can apply high-quality mineral fertilizers to the soil right during irrigation. And arizarum does not need trimming, however, from time to time you still need to remove the leaves that are losing their decorative effect.

Arizarum propagates either by dividing the bushes, or by separating lateral shoots from the tubers - these shoots are planted in the fall to a depth of fifteen centimeters.
