Angelonia (lat. Angelonia) - a fragrant flowering plant from the Norichnikov family. It received its so interesting name in honor of the very peculiar people of angelon living in Venezuela (to be more precise, in Caracas), because this plant was first discovered there. Angelonia was introduced to the culture in the United States in 1990. The second name of the plant is summer snapdragon.

Description

Angelonia is either a shrub or a herb, endowed with lanceolate opposite leaves. And single brightly colored angelonia flowers are collected in spectacular brushes.

As for the most common angelonia narrow-leaved, the height of this evergreen beauty with straight stems ranges from forty-five to fifty-five centimeters. When rubbed, its pointed, serrated and lanceolate leaves emit a characteristic apple aroma. As for the two-lipped flowers of this plant, they can have a wide variety of colors: white, and blue, and purple, and pinkish-lilac, etc. The diameter of these flowers slightly exceeds the mark of two centimeters, and all the flowers form spike-shaped and surprisingly slender inflorescences, the length of which can vary from eight to twenty centimeters. And the fruits of angelonia have the appearance of two-celled capsules equipped with leathery septa.

In total, the genus Angelonia includes about three dozen species - both dwarf shrubs and herbaceous plants.

Where grows

Angelonia is quite widespread in Central and South America, as well as in Hawaii and Mexico. In nature, angelonia is most often seen in subtropical and tropical zones.

Usage

In temperate latitudes, angelonia is grown mainly as an annual or biennial, and in the subtropics and tropics, it grows as a magnificent evergreen perennial. Angelonia is great for framing compositions from summer gardens or flower beds, as well as for growing in balcony boxes or containers.

Most often, angelonia narrow-leaved and some of its hybrids are grown in culture. And this plant is suitable not only for decorating gardens and premises, but also stands great in the cut!

Growing and caring

Angelonia is quite thermophilic and photophilous, however, she feels very well in partial shade. And she is easily content with rather small volumes of soil! In addition, angelonia needs regular watering - it is especially important not to allow excessive drying out, since as a result of this, the plant may simply die. This beauty responds very well to fertilizing, both organic and mineral. Nevertheless, angelonia should be fed in moderation, otherwise much more leaves will develop on it than flowers.

After the flowers wither from the angelonia, it is necessary to cut off all the flower stalks. And this plant is propagated by seeds sown for seedlings in January or February. At the same time, there is absolutely no need to bury the seeds. Ideally, they are generally germinated in the light at a temperature of twenty-one to twenty-four degrees. As for planting seedlings in open ground, it is usually carried out in late May or early June. Some breeders propagate angelonia by cuttings - as a rule, their rooting occurs within one to two weeks.

In general, angelonia is very unpretentious in leaving (she is not afraid of either abundant rains, or high temperatures, or drought), and pests and diseases affect angelonia extremely rarely, however, sometimes it can still be attacked by aphids or powdery mildew.
