Alissum is an annual garden flowers that in their appearance very much resemble a kind of white foam, consisting of small flowers. It is worth noting that these flowers also spread a surprisingly pleasant sweetish honey scent. Sometimes alissum is also called stonemason and beetroot. These flowers are part of the cruciferous family. In general, only one species is grown in culture - this is an annual plant, which is sometimes also called marine lobularia.

Description of alissum

Alyssum will grow as a very small and extremely compact bush that can range in height from fifteen to forty centimeters. In this case, the shoots of the plant will be either creeping or rising. All shoots of the plant are covered with small leaves, and at the end you can see a brush endowed with very small white flowers. After the allisum bloom ends, pods will appear, which will also have very small seeds, colored in light brown or orange tones. It is important to remember that the germination of the seeds of this flower lasts for three years.

In nature, alissum can be found in the steppes and mountains in the Mediterranean.

Growing and caring for alyssum

With the help of such a stylish flower as alyssum, you can very profitably decorate alpine slides or rockeries. In addition, alyssum is also good for decorating the edges of paths and various borders. Actually, with the help of this flower, you can create stunning carpets that can be endowed with various shapes. Combinations of alyssum with other plants and flowers are also acceptable.

Then the flowering will decrease and then it is necessary to trim the plant, while it is recommended to shorten the tops of the shoots exactly by half. After the pruning has been done, abundant watering and feeding the plant should be ensured. After a while, alyssum will begin to bloom again and this period will last until the very beginning of autumn frosts.

For abundant flowering of alyssum, open sunny places are needed, while in partial shade the plant will bloom much less. This flower is not particularly whimsical in terms of the soil, but you should not overmoisten it too much. Loose, drained and breathable soil is considered the best option. However, on poor soil, alissum will grow quite well. However, on fertile soil that has been generously fertilized with humus, this plant will not bloom well.

The plant can also grow in the space between the stones, while withstanding the active hit of intense sunlight. In addition, a short-term drought is not a problem for this plant. And in the autumn and spring, alissum is able to withstand relative frosts with honor.

Reproduction takes place by means of seeds, sowing is carried out in open ground, it is best to do this in the period from late April to early May. In warm weather, the first shoots may appear after five days, and flowering will begin about forty days after the sowing was carried out. Alyssum should be watered occasionally, as well as loosened and weeded.
