Alocasia (lat. Alocasia) - a genus of tropical plants, distinguished by the virtuosity of large beautiful leaves, for the sake of which they are grown in greenhouse conditions where summer alternates with frosty winters. Although milky juice flows through the plant arteries of Alokaziy, in a number of countries in East Asia, people use the leaves in their national dishes.

Description

In the ranks of the Alokazia genus, there are seven dozen plant species that live exclusively in the humid tropics, agreeing to live in other climatic conditions only under the protection of the walls of the premises.

Alocasia have a short but powerful rhizome, capable of extracting nutrients from the soil for their large, sometimes just gigantic, leaves. A pair of such leaves is enough to build a roof over a modest hut. Under the bush of Alokazia, you can arrange a place for tea drinking, where it will be cozy and comfortable at any time of the day.

Passionate fans of Alokazia, who grow the plant in indoor conditions, rarely get to admire the flowers, and even more so, its fruits. This does not upset flower growers at all, since the stunning beauty of the leaves fully reimburses for all their efforts.

Whoever is associated with large leaves growing in the natural conditions of the warm tropics. These are pterodactyls, extinct in the Jurassic period, rhythmically flapping their acute-angled powerful wings, on which bones are clearly traced - light veins on the surface of dark green leaves; and huge elephants, or rather the ears of elephants, enjoying the sounds and rustle of mighty tropical plants.

The inflorescence of small monoecious flowers resembles an ear of corn, the grains of which, as they ripen, turn, as a rule, into red hemispherical berries, hiding seeds inside themselves.

Varieties

* Alocasia large-rhizome (Latin Alocasia macrorrhizjs) - a powerful rhizome gives rise to powerful leaves. He prefers to grow closer to human habitation, changing his love for tropical thickets.

* Alocasia klobuchkovaya (Latin Alocasia cucullata) - on almost half-meter petioles, holding on to a thick stem, heart-shaped leaves are located the same length as the petioles, the green surface of which shines in the sun with a gloss.

* Indian alocasia (lat. Alocasia indica) - triangular-arrow-shaped meter-long leaves sit on erect strong petioles, the bases of which form a special type of decorative stem, called by botanists "caudex".

* Alocasia Sandera (Latin Alocasia sanderiana) - the surface of dark green picturesque leaves of irregular shape, the wavy edge of which is highlighted by a white stripe, additionally decorated with white veins and shines with a metallic sheen. The reverse side of the leaf sports a silvery-purple color.

* Alocasia Low (lat. Alocasia lowii) - stands out from a number of tall relatives in the genus, growing only up to 60 cm in height. Leathery leaves with an olive-colored surface have chosen the shape of triangles.

Growing

The difficulty of growing a tropical plant in indoor conditions is that maintaining air humidity up to 85 percent in a living room does not seem to be a real thing. Unless, to determine a place for exotic beauty in the bathroom, or to acquire a modern grow box, equipped with special devices, with the help of which you can create any conditions necessary for the plant. Lower humidity not only makes it difficult for the plant to grow, but also provokes the appearance of mites, which create even greater problems.

The survival temperature of the plant is above the thermometer mark plus 17.

The soil should be fertile, loose and moist.

Alokazia is propagated by sowing seeds, separating offspring, dividing the overgrown rhizome.
